One pro-lifer does not believe the voters in her state approve of their tax dollars funding abortions — especially considering the staggering rate that it’s occurring.
Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico tells OneNewsNow The Land of Enchantment is among the 16 states that are allowed to use state taxpayer dollars to fully fund abortion.
“Our Supreme Court ruled back in 1999 that essentially women have equal rights as men, and therefore the state should pay for their abortions,” Shaver explains. “But we do believe that the taxpayers of New Mexico deserve to know just how much of their hard-earned tax dollars are being used to fund abortions.”
So with a public records request, Abortion Free New Mexico has obtained the data from 2017-2019, discovering some alarming information.
“Over the three-year period, almost 6,000 abortions were paid for by taxpayers, and it cost the taxpayers almost $800,000,” the pro-lifer relays.
New Mexico is a poor state that ranks number one in child poverty, which means it is a welfare state where many people rely on the government. Shaver submits that the problem that needs to be challenged is child poverty – an issue that killing preborn children does not resolve.
While New Mexico is a left-leaning state, Shaver says the voters tend to be conservative on a lot of issues, and one of them is tax money funding abortions. The current system could only begin to change if those conservative voters show up at the polls in November.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- Newly obtained Medicaid data by Abortion Free New Mexico reveals that from 2017-2019 state tax payers paid $791,106.50 for 5,889 abortions. The data was acquired through a public records request and also includes the names of 94 doctors, midwives and nurses who were paid by the state for the procedures. In addition to free-standing abortion facilities, nine hospitals were also paid for abortions through New Mexico Medicaid. New Mexico is one 16 states that uses state tax dollars to fully fund abortions, because of the supreme court ruling in New Mexico Right to Choose/NARAL v. Johnson. The court ruled, in part, that the life of the unborn child is not compelling enough to outweigh the special interest of the mother. For this reason, New Mexicans are forced to foot the bill for low income women who qualify for New Mexico Medicaid and choose to have an abortion. It is a reality that infuriates many people of faith and conscience who would rather see their hard earned money used to promote life and provide legitimate help and resources to low income women with unplanned pregnancies.
Bud Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,
“New Mexico tax payers should be outraged that our hard earned tax money from 2017-2019 was spent to fund 5,889 abortions at a staggering cost of $791,106.50! American’s fought to gain our independence from tyrants in 1776, in part, due to taxation (of 3 pence per pound on tea) without equal representation. How much more egregious is it that our tax dollars are being used to fund the killing of innocent children without our ability to refuse? The New Mexico Supreme Court ruling, New Mexico Right to Choose/NARAL v. Johnson foisted a tyrannical precedent upon the tax payers of New Mexico without any due recourse to remedy this unjust burden. Furthermore, with New Mexico ranked as one of the poorest states in the country, surely there are better ways that New Mexico tax dollars could be spent to help low income mothers rise up out of poverty then simply providing them with abortions. Instead of providing reasonable solutions, the New Mexico Supreme Court, unfortunately, has misappropriated our tax dollars to eliminate poor children through Medicaid funded abortions.”
Dishonorable Mentions
Southwestern Women’s Options, Albuquerque’s late term abortion facility, where abortions are performed through all nine months of pregnancy received the most money $340,773.61 out of the five abortion facilities in the state. Southwestern Women’s Options employs abortionists Shelley Sella who received $147,697.50 and Carmen Laundau who received $102,874.50 both of whom are at the top of the list in terms of abortion numbers and payments received. Sella is a resident of California who travels to New Mexico to abort babies in the latest stages of pregnancy. Landau lives in New Mexico, but received her medical degree from Communist Cuba. Southwestern Women’s Options performed 1,957 Medicaid funded abortions, each one representing a innocent child’s life.
The University of New Mexico- UNM, which has its own off-campus free standing abortion facility, received the second highest payments totaling $300,858.91 but actually performed 2,686 abortions, which was 729 moreabortions than Southwestern Women’s Options during the same three year period. The data showed many medical doctors that were affiliated with UNM, presumably residents, who have since moved on from New Mexico and now practice in other states. This confirms what Abortion Free New Mexico has stated for years, that UNM is at the heart of the New Mexico abortion cartel. Their abortion training and residency training programs are a catalyst for what the abortion industry hopes will be responsible for raising up the next generation of abortion providers. Thankfully, the numbers of abortion providers continues to be on the decline. Not every OB-GYN doctor is willing to betray true medicine by offering abortions in their offices.
Planned Parenthood, which is the nations largest abortion provider, was next in line performing 761 abortions and receiving $67,408.98. Vivianne Clark, a registered nurse and Lucia Cies, who closed her private abortion practice in 2011, appear to be the primary abortion providers of the Planned Parenthood facilities that are located in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
The Women’s Specialists of New Mexico practitioners that were reimbursed for 73 medicaid funded abortion procedures in addition to the physicians affiliated with LovelaceMedical group were the most surprising. One doctor alone at Lovelace, Regan Riley performed 70 abortions! Lovelace has been known to be more pro-life friendly and many were under the impression that abortions were not performed in their facilities. This medicaid data proves otherwise and should be cause for concern in the pro-life community.
Franz Theard’s [Hill Top] Women’s Reproductive Clinic in Santa Teresa, NM did not appear in this Medicaid report because they are a cash only abortion clinic and do not accept Medicaid clients.

In addition to hospitals, several midwives are performing abortions throughout New Mexico violating their mission to help mothers bring their babies into the world safely.
There were doctors that are not licensed to practice in New Mexico, from Colorado, Wyoming and the furthest coming in from New York who were reimbursed by New Mexico Medicaid for abortions they performed.
Abortion Numbers Statewide Are On The Decline
Over the course of the three year period, abortions that were covered by New Mexico Medicaid did decline each year. In 2017, there were 2,285 performed. In 2018, the number dropped to 2,109 and in 2019 was the steepest drop with 1,495 abortions that Medicaid covers. Tax payers can only hope that the numbers continue to decrease as more women choose life for their babies.
New Mexico tax payers deserve to know how their tax dollars are used as well as which practitioners in the community are willing to provide abortions. Each abortion takes a child’s life and this report should encourage the pro-life community to be even more diligent in working to build a culture of life in New Mexico.
*Correction 9/27/2020: On August 19, 2020, Abortion Free New Mexico published this report detailing information obtained from the New Mexico Department of Human Services related to Medicaid funded abortions in New Mexico from 2017 through 2019. In our original report, we identified Dr. Steven Gough as the medical director for Women’s Specialists of New Mexico and reported that he had performed 8 abortions between 2017 and 2019.
Dr. Gough has contacted us and states that two of the statements contained in our article are incorrect. Dr. Gough tells us that he is neither the medical director of Women’s Specialists of New Mexico, nor has he performed any abortions.
Dr. Gough’s official title according to the Women’s Specialists of New Mexico website is, Medical Director (Cosmetics), – Physician.
We are happy to learn that Dr. Gough does not perform abortions. Apparently, the Medicaid information provided by the state was incorrect, and we apologize to Dr. Gough for the error.
As a result, we are also following up with a request for additional information from the New Mexico Department of Human Services to ensure that this does not occur in the future.

A pro-life group in New Mexico is working to shut down what it considers to be a racist abortion facility.
Abortion Free New Mexico has researched and kept a watchful eye on the University of New Mexico (UNM) Center for Reproductive Health, an off-site late-term abortion facility where more than half of the abortions are done on Hispanic women.
Pro-life spokeswoman Tara Shaver tells OneNewsNow UNM is the state’s flagship taxpayer-funded university.
“For years they have been what we consider to be the heart of the abortion cartel in New Mexico because they train abortionists, they were harvesting fetal baby body parts and using them for vaccine research, and things like that,” Shaver reports. “They’re very deeply entrenched in the abortion industry.”
UNM’s Eve Espey, professor and chair of the Department of OB-GYN and medical director at the abortion facility, has a sordid history. In 2014, for example, she was awarded the Margaret Sanger Award for her eugenic population control efforts targeting the Hispanic community.
“Earlier in her career she really focused on … abortions done on women in South America and also in the Native American tribes here in New Mexico,” Shaver notes.
Abortion Free New Mexico is calling on the university, which is currently $13 million in debt, to close its free-standing abortion facility, which performs abortions through the six month of pregnancy. The pro-life organization is also calling for Espey, who receives an annual salary of $505,388 for her work at UNM, making her the school’s sixth highest paid employee 2019, to step down.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- Planned Parenthood, in an effort to address systemic racism within its organization, is distancing itself from their founder, Margaret Sanger by removing her name off of their flagship abortion facility in New York City and according to Yahoo News,
“Planned Parenthood will also work with the City Council and community members to strip nearby Margaret Sanger Square of that name—a designation they had initially pushed for.”
Yahoo News states why this drastic measure is needed,
“Sanger, who devoted her life to legalizing and increasing access to contraception, coined the term “birth control” in 1914. After being arrested for opening the nation’s first birth control clinic in 1916, she founded the American Birth Control League, the predecessor to Planned Parenthood, just four years later. But during her crusade, Sanger also aligned herself with the then-popular eugenics movement, which supported attempting to ‘improve’ human populations by controlling reproduction. In the years before the Holocaust made it impossible to ignore where that notion could lead, ideas from eugenics were often wielded in the service of white supremacy and other forms of discrimination.”
In 2014 Eve Espey, the Medical Director of the UNM Center for Reproductive Health, was awarded the Margaret Sanger Award for her eugenic population control efforts targeting the Hispanic population.
Eve Espey receives an annual salary at of $505,388 for her work at UNM! In fact, she was the sixth highest paid employee at UNM in 2019.
Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,
“As the racist history of Margaret Sanger and her ties to eugenics comes to light, it’s time for the University of New Mexico to end the systemic racism within the state’s flagship institution by firing Eve Espey and shutting down the UNM Center for Reproductive Health. As an avid promoter of abortion expansion in New Mexico and worldwide, Eve Espey received the 2014 Margaret Sanger award at the New Mexico Planned Parenthood’s 50 year celebration. Espey has also worked on the faculty of the Health Sciences Global Health Program (GHP), which collaborates with the United Nation’s World Health Organization (WHO) on education, service and research. Espey’s focus with the GHP was family planning and abortion in Mexico and Central America.”
Tara Shaver went on to state,
“As documented in previous reports, the University of New Mexico has a sordid reputation of targeting Hispanics for elimination by abortion thanks to UNM’s Eve Espey, Professor and Chair of the Department of OB-GYN, and Medical Director at UNM’s off-site abortion facility, the UNM Center for Reproductive Health. At a time when UNM is currently 13 million dollars in debt, let’s start with firing Eve Espey, defunding and closing the UNM Center for Reproductive Health late term abortion facility.”

Minority Hispanic women are disproportionately targeted by the [New Mexico] abortion cartel, accounting for 53% of all abortions in the state while Hispanics account for only 42.1% of the population.
In addition, abortions rose amongst Hispanic women by 9% from 1,643 in 2012 to 1,798 in 2013. This represented a larger percentage than the overall statewide trend.
Pro-abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood, Young Women United and even the University of New Mexico have exploited this demographic in the worst possible way by targeting them for elimination by abortion.
ACTION ITEM: Encourage the University of New Mexico to end systemic racism!
Contact UNM President Garnet Stokes and the UNM Regents and respectfully ask them to fire Eve Espey and defund and close the UNM Center for Reproductive Health late term abortion facility. Another month of ministry has come and gone but we are building momentum. There is so much positive energy right now in New Mexico as more people are getting involved in the pro-life movement. This is all building hope for life affirming change when we finally have the opportunity elect a historic 101 pro-life leaders all across New Mexico in November.
Even though New Mexico is known as the late term abortion capital, we only have 5 abortion facilities statewide. While we continue our investigative research, look for weak links, file complaints that bring accountability, pro-life legislation is the final piece of the puzzle.
Please pray with us that godly candidates win the overwhelming majority on election day so that we can get a super majority to override our current radical pro-abortion governor’s veto power and pass 100% pro-life legislation, because Baby Lives Matter (BLM).

When the UNM Center for Reproductive Health placed a banner over their building stating, “Heroes Work Here” Bud and I didn’t really think too much of it. After so many years of ministry we have come to understand the mentality of those in the abortion industry. Abortionists operate as if they are above the law and any accountability, which is no surprise, since they have lost their moral compass and have betrayed true medicine.
Michelle Garcia Holmes (R) who is running for US Congress (CD1), however, was taken aback and very disturbed by this message that was being sent into the community. She took it upon herself to do facebook live videos with the message that heroes do not work in abortion clinics. It was really a God thing that she became so passionate and launched a petition to the President of UNM to ask to have the banner removed.
After several weeks of the petition, which we helped to circulate, a press conference was scheduled featuring Michelle and other pro-life legislative candidates. Within 24 hours of sending out a press release about the press conference we received word that the banner had been taken down. So, on Friday, July 10th we held a press conference believing that UNM was taking a step in the right direction and listening to the people.
The press conference was awesome as Dinah Vargas who is running in House District 10 (HD10) where this UNM abortion clinic is located and Stefani Lord (HD22) shared their hearts about why they are pro-life and running for office in New Mexico. Michelle Garcia Holmes, in her speech, called for the defunding of UNM as the next step. UNM is in a financial crisis and it makes perfect sense for them to take funding from their abortion facility that takes lives and put those funds where they can be used to save lives.
Unfortunately, the next Friday, the banner was back up. We are drafting a new petition where emails will be sent to both UNM president Garnett Stokes and the Board of Regents.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- Over the past decade we have worked tirelessly as pro-life missionaries to build the foundation on which an abortion free New Mexico is possible. One of the biggest obstacles we have faced over the years is the makeup of the New Mexico legislature. Pro-life bills get tabled in committee and never have a chance to be heard on the house or senate floor much less be signed by the Governor. All of this can change in November and if conservatives gain a supermajority in November they will even be able to override any veto our democrat governor imposes.
The Land of Enchantment is facing an unprecedented general election in 100 days. A record breaking 101 republican candidates (all of them are solidly pro-life) have been recruited by a movement called Respect New Mexico to take back our legislature and turn the state red in November. The time to change the direction of our state is long overdue, we know that New Mexico shouldn’t be at the top of every bad list and bottom of every good list of national ranking statistics. We have such a great opportunity, like never before, as the pro-life community to make sure that strong godly leaders are elected in New Mexico.
Let’s make sure that we did all that we could to help these 101 statewide candidates get elected.
The hard truth is that democrats outnumber republicans in New Mexico right out of the gate. Most democrats don’t lift a finger to get elected because they either have never had an opponent-many of them actually haven’t faced a republican challenger ever, or they rely on the fact that democrats are militant voters. This means that republicans have to campaign harder, be smarter and more dedicated in order to win. Reaching swing voters is imperative, those who are independent and conservative democrats need to hear from us and know that they don’t have to vote for a progressive leftist candidate on November 3rd.

Manny Lardizabal and his wife Grace are long time friends of ours, in fact, they were one of the first people we met when we moved to New Mexico 10 years ago. Manny is running to defeat incumbent Jacob Candelaria, who consistently opposes pro-life legislation year after year in Santa Fe. Tara is serving as Manny’s campaign treasurer.
Lisa Meyer-Hagen is a long time pro-life advocate and truly has a heart for senate district 12 where Southwestern Women’s Options late term abortion facility is located. Lisa is running to defeat incumbent Jerry Ortiz y Pino who is a proud pro-abortion Catholic who also opposes pro-life legislation year after year in Santa Fe.
Dinah is a fierce pro-life warrior who wants to build a culture of life in New Mexico. The UNM Center for Reproductive Health abortion facility is in her district and she has joined us in our call for UNM to abandon its radical abortion agenda. In her lifetime, district 10 has only ever had two representatives, career politicians, who’ve failed to meet the needs of the people.
Kayla Marshall is running against incumbent Patricia Royal Caballero, who is another proud pro-abortion Catholic who opposes pro-life legislation year after year in Santa Fe. Kayla is a hard worker who will represent our values and we are proud to be working with her in district 13 to get voters engaged.
Michelle Garcia Holmes has been such an inspiration to us over the years as she continues to fight for the babies and our values. She is running for congress to defeat incumbent Deb Haaland, who stands shoulder to shoulder with Nancy Pelosi and AOC. As we go door-to door for the state candidates we are also asking voters to vote for Michelle as her district encompasses 3/4 of Bernalillo County.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- On Friday, July 10, 2020 Abortion Free New Mexico joined Michelle Garcia Holmes for U.S. Congress, Dinah Vargas for New Mexico House of Representatives District 10 and Stefani Lord for New Mexico House District 22 on location at the UNM free-standing abortion facility to let the community know that abortionists are not heroes. Within 24 hours of announcing a press conference at the UNM Center for Reproductive Health, launching an online petition with emails going directly to UNM President Garnett Stokes, in addition to weeks of overflowing public outcry, we received word that the “Heroes Work Here” banner had been taken down!

At the press conference Michelle Garcia Holmes announced that in response to the University of New Mexico’s removal of the “Heroes Work Here” banner that the UNM President and the UNM Regents now need to defund and close down the UNMCRH abortion facility,
“We are once again going to take our plea to the people and encourage them to call, write, email all of the UNM Board of Regents. The University of New Mexico is an institution of higher learning, our hope is that the regents disassociate the university from this facility because the intentional taking of an innocent persons life should never be associated with our university’s policies or mission. Let’s keep the fight going, let’s shut this clinic down, let’s defund this facility. The University of New Mexico is currently thirteen million dollars in debt, let’s start here.”
Dinah Vargas, candidate for New Mexico House of Representatives District 10, where the UNM Center for Reproductive Health is located, issued the following statement today,
“It’s real simple for me, I’m against abortion because God is against abortion. For far too long it seems that New Mexicans have been pushed around and been told that the unborn aren’t human beings and all that the world hears about New Mexico is that we kill the unborn in great numbers. This abortion clinic happens to be in my district and I want to end abortion. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself to never be silent, never to be passive and never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement and to never stop defending life until all of my brothers and sisters are protected and we are a nation that is about liberty and justice, not just for some but, for all. As a campaign promise I will do my part to end abortion.”
As a strong woman and pro-life defender, Stefani Lord, candidate for New Mexico House of Representatives District 22. shared her personal testimony. She is opposed to abortion because her birth mother went to an abortion facility to abort her life, but the state in which she was born had restrictions that prevented her from being killed, unlike New Mexico where you can be aborted through all nine months. She shared how her adopted mom was the abortionist who would have killed her and that she grew up and saw first hand the devastation that abortion took on women’s lives. She stated,
“My adopted mom was an abortionist, and she was no hero. It tore her up inside, I saw their faces and I saw their tears. I know exactly first hand from birth on, how abortion affects people including the doctors, the nurses and the staff that are doing it. They can pretend all they want, but it is eating them up inside. No matter how much they want to say that killing a child is normal, it’s not normal. I want to be very clear, abortion doctors are not heroes and this abortion facility should never have had that banner on there. It’s an insult to people like me. It’s offensive. Abortion is not normal and abortionists are not heroes.”

The University of New Mexico tax payer funded abortion clinic, (University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health) is claiming that they are heroes for providing abortions during the Covid-19 crisis. The clinic hoisted a large banner with the message “Heroes Work Here” covering their permanent sign. Our Congressional Campaign found out the clinic proudly posted the banner several weeks ago. The clinic is located at 2301 Yale SE in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Michelle Garcia Holmes said, “My shock quickly turned to sadness when I saw this banner.” “I know so many heroes in our community who are fighting to save lives amidst this pandemic. The work our doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals have been doing, has been challenging, high-risk and a huge personal sacrifice. Many are working long hours and have been separated from their families for extended periods of time.”
From the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, our Governor deemed abortion clinics as essential businesses. “I disagree, at a critical time such as this, I believe the clinics should have been closed and deemed non-essential.” “We have had numerous people coming in from out of state to visit the abortion clinics in our state, because they are open and will do abortions up to a baby’s date of birth.”
“For an abortion clinic, whose sole purpose is to take life, to blatantly compare itself to hospital medical staff caring for covid-19 patients is shocking and insulting.” Garcia Holmes continued, “We do have medical heroes, saving lives every day while risking their own safety and well-being, however they are not working at these abortion clinics. I have the highest respect for our medical community and the work they have done to protect all New Mexicans during these difficult times.”
The Garcia Holmes Congressional Campaign and our supporters have notified by telephone and mail, asking the University of New Mexico President, Garnett Stokes, to immediately have the management of the UNM sponsored abortion clinic to take down that banner. As of today, the offensive banner remains posted. Garcia Holmes stated, “This attempt for the UNM abortion clinic to steal the honor and praise of truly dedicated medical staff at our hospitals and clinics should stop now. The intentional taking of another innocent person’s life should never be rewarded, celebrated or honored.”

We exposed the death of Keisha Atkins at Southwestern Women’s Options after receiving an anonymous tip. It was the late term abortion method that made her septic and killed her.
Over the past 10 years we have conducted over 50 undercover investigations and have exposed late term abortion across America.

BREAKING: Abortion Free New Mexico Joins ProgressNow New Mexico Calling for ABQ City Council President Pat Davis to Resign
Albuquerque, New Mexico- In a comprehensive post and statement made by Progress Now New Mexico on June 25, 2020, ProgressNow New Mexico disavowed their former Executive Director Pat Davis and threw him under the #CancelCulture bus.
ProgressNow New Mexico issued the following statement,
“This week, new details have surfaced regarding former ProgressNow New Mexico Executive Director and Albuquerque City Councilor Pat Davis’ shooting of a Black man while working as a cop in Washington D.C. Davis originally founded ProgressNow New Mexico but left the organization in 2017 and while his name is attached to the organization and its beginnings, we want to state clearly that his past and present actions are not reflective of ProgressNow New Mexico values.”
Pat Davis made national news and was featured on Tucker Carlson’s show when he ran for U.S. Congress (CD1) in 2018 for his “F— The NRA” campaign. At that time Pat Davis stated,
“[Pro-gun] policies resulted in dead children, dead mothers and dead fathers. Being polite hasn’t made our schools any safer or protected officers like I used to be.”
Tucker Carlson fired back,
“How many NRA members have committed mass shootings?”
While Pat Davis could not name any questionable NRA member shootings at the time, ironically now City Councilor Pat Davis is under fire politically for his own questionable shooting of a black man!

Thirteen years ago, in 2007, our lives were forever changed! Tara and I were working in an evangelistic apartment ministry in Flagstaff, Arizona. That summer we went to Spirit West Coast in southern California with a group of college students, and after watching our favorite Christian bands…
Tara visited a pro-life booth, took some information, and the rest is history!
Driving back to Flagstaff, AZ our hearts were awakened to the reality of the Abortion Holocaust that has killed 1/3rd of our generation!
We prayed a simple prayer,
“Lord we commit our lives to your service to work to end this grave injustice until you call us home with you, or until abortion is ended in America. Use us as you see fit we humbly pray.”
The pro-life organization, Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, hosted a booth that summer where Tara received eye opening information and an invitation to their annual pro-life training camp. We attended their camp later that summer and our lives have never been the same. We never looked back and have been fulfilling our commitment to God, pursuing an end to abortion, ever since!
After attending their pro-life training camp we moved to Riverside, California in 2008 to work with Survivors as assistant Directors of the Campus Life Tour where we toured the country visiting over 180 college campuses and high schools from 2008-2009.
Then we moved to Wichita, Kansas to work as interns with Operation Rescue from 2009-2010 and have been full-time pro-life missionaries working in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2010 until the present.

Abortion supporters in New Mexico are actually making the pro-life movement look good.
LifeNews reports that a far-left group in New Mexico has posted a billboard near Albuquerque claiming that “rape is about power and control and so are abortion bans,” suggesting laws protecting the lives of preborn children are similar to the violent act of rape. Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico disagrees with that comparison.
“The progressive pro-abortion liberals they think that this type of language resonates with New Mexicans, but it doesn’t,” she asserts. “New Mexico is a state that values families; it values children, and so this messaging just doesn’t resonate with the average person in New Mexico whatsoever. It really only resonates with those who champion abortion.”
Since this is an election year, candidates on the left are fighting against any thinking that might cost them votes. Nevertheless, Shaver’s organization will continue on track with its goal – “an abortion-free state where every child is protected and valued.”
“The type of rhetoric that the pro-abortion community is trying to use right now is just not going to help them at all,” the pro-lifer continues. “It just makes them seem more radical, and it makes us look more reasonable.”
She adds that anyone who wants to fight for human rights should fight against abortion, because it is a violent act against a tiny, defenseless human being.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- On Tuesday, June 9, 2020 sidewalk counselors outside the notorious late term abortion facility Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO) witnessed a woman being rushed into an ambulance and transported to a nearby hospital. Shockingly, this is the 35th documented abortion injury at SWO since 2008!

According to eye witnesses, the patient was in a vehicle with California license plates.
Late term abortions are, unfortunately, performed through all nine months of pregnancy in New Mexico. Every Tuesday at Southwestern Women’s Options the barbaric 3-4 day long late term abortion procedure is started on women who come to New Mexico (from all across the world) for what is known as Abortion Tourism. The barbaric procedure begins with an injection of digoxin into the woman’s uterus which causes the baby to die from a fetal heart attack that reportedly takes several hours for the baby’s heart to finally stop. Each day thereafter, the woman’s cervix is artificially dilated so that she can give birth to her dead child on a Friday or Saturday.
Tara Shaver issued the following statement,
“At a time when businesses and Churches have been forced to close, abortion facilities remain open and at least two women have been injured. These injuries confirm that abortion is not healthcare and that these facilities are not even equipped to handle the complications that arise during such invasive elective procedures. Women and their children deserve better than abortion and Abortion Free New Mexico is working to provide accountability and a culture where these barbaric procedures are intolerable.”
This is the second woman injured during a botched abortion in New Mexico since Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham refused to close non-essential abortion facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 25, 2020 Southwest Coalition For Life witnessed a woman injured in Santa Teresa, New Mexico at Hill Top abortion facility run by abortionist Franz Theard.
That injury occurred two days after New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office released the following statement to Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico in response to our call to close non-essential elective abortion facilities,
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries. All the clinics are sanitizing very well and they are not going to close.”
In addition to the 35 abortion injuries documented at Southwestern Women’s Options, and the recent abortion injury documented in Santa Teresa, Abortion Free New Mexico has also documented an additional four botched abortions at the University of New Mexico’s free-standing abortion facility UNM Center for Reproductive Health.

This month at The University of New Mexico’s free-standing abortion clinic UNMCRH, where Abortion Free New Mexico holds a weekly prayer and protest presence, a young woman chose life for her baby!
The young mom spoke to Tara Shaver, of Abortion Free New Mexico, and confided to her that after her last abortion she vowed to God that she would never have another abortion, but she’s pregnant again and struggling with addiction. Sometimes women are looking for sign from God and it just so happens that we were the sign she needed to choose life! So after talking to Tara and receiving resources along with hope for the future, she turned around and left, still pregnant with her baby!
Tara has since connected with her by phone and will assist her throughout her pregnancy. Unfortunately, for the babies in their mothers wombs, while Churches and small businesses are deemed “non-essential” and shut down, our governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham has deemed abortion clinics “essential”.
So our prayer and protest presence at the abortion facility is equally essential!

This struck a nerve, went viral, and even drew a response from US Congressional candidate Michelle Garcia Holmes (R) who stated,
“This will stop when I’m in congress!”
What is even more shocking is that due to the absence of ANY common sense abortion restrictions (like parental notification laws) the New Mexico abortion cartel is able to TARGET minors for abortions, and our tax dollars fully fund this too! In fact, undercover reports conducted by members Abortion Free New Mexico reveal that abortion clinics workers are coaching minors (as young as 14) on how to get New Mexico Medicaid to pay for their abortions- even when their pregnancies are the result of sexual abuse.
In fact, the University of New Mexico is so brazen in their exploitation of minors (or “young women” as they call them), that they run a “Young Women’s Clinic” at the same location as their abortion clinic!

“In a recently obtained undercover phone call to Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, a 14 year old minor makes an abortion appointment. Not only is the client hiding the abortion from her parents, she is also making sure she can hide the fact that the boyfriend who got her pregnant is a 21 year old man.
This constitutes statutory rape and should be reported to authorities, however, the Planned Parenthood employee assures the minor that the Doctor, Shauna Jamison, won’t report it and that this type of thing happens, and is covered up by Planned Parenthood all the time!
It’s no surprise that Planned Parenthood continues to cover up for rapists since they profit from these lucrative abortions, but in New Mexico where abortion has no restrictions whatsoever, the point needs to be made that young girls are being sexually exploited and abortion doctors in this state are complicit!”

“In a new undercover video by Abortion Free New Mexico and Priests for Life, the caller posing as a minor and victim of incest by an older family member is seeking a late-term abortion at 26 weeks of pregnancy. Instead of urging the minor to contact the authorities, the abortion clinic staff gives the young girl a phone number to the New Mexico Medicaid office so that she can obtain the $7,500 procedure for free.
Angelo Artuso, senior legal counsel for Abortion Free New Mexico, said medical professionals are mandatory reporters under New Mexico law.
‘Under the mandatory reporting law (Section 32A-4-3A), physicians and nurses have a duty to report suspected child abuse. The law (Section 32A-4-2 I) provides that child abuse includes criminal sexual penetration, incest, OR criminal sexual contact,’ Artuso explained.”

“In an undercover call placed on May 17, 2017 to Hill Top Women’s Reproductive Clinic in El Paso, TX the caller posing as a 15 year old minor inquires about obtaining an abortion without her parents involvement.
Without hesitation the abortion facility worker refers the young girl to their ‘other clinic location in Santa Teresa.’ Located according to Hill Top Women’s Reproductive Clinic’s website, ‘Only 11 minutes from Downtown El Paso.‘ It’s as if this is one of the main reasons the Santa Teresa abortion facility located a few miles across the border in New Mexico exists.
An abortion appointment is secured for the following Saturday and all the minor is required to bring is $430.00 and her identification card.”

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham began lifting her rigid restrictions on small businesses, allowing them to re-open at 25% capacity. However, she arbitrarily continues to punish the Catholic Churches of New Mexico by only allowing Churches to re-open at 10% capacity.
This attack against religious freedom in New Mexico is uniquely impacting the Catholic community because Catholic services are uniquely dependent upon the physical presence of their Priests and their parishioners due to their Eucharistic Masses. Evangelical Churches throughout New Mexico, on the other hand, have been able to continue virtually unimpeded due to services that can be streamed online.
Could it be that Lujan Grisham is using her executive power during this COVID-19 crisis to wage war on the Catholic Church of New Mexico, due to the Catholic Bishops’ bold stance in opposition to 2019’s House Bill 51, the – Decriminalize Abortion Ban during the 2019 legislative session?
“[Pro-life] advocates are especially grateful for the efforts of the Catholic bishops of New Mexico who worked in defense of life. In addition to several official statements from the bishops, Abortion Free New Mexico noted the prayer vigil organized by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in the rotunda of the capitol building. Archbishop John Wester welcomed people of all faiths to join in prayer to ‘move the hearts of the Democrat legislators to oppose pro-death legislation,’ the pro-life group said.”
In fact, it was Catholic Democrats in New Mexico who were pivotal in the defeat of this radical pro-death agenda spearheaded by New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham.
During the 2019 Legislative Session, Lujan Grisham welcomed radical pro-abortion extremists in Santa Fe and vowed to sign their extreme legislation if passed by the New Mexico legislators.
“More than 100 advocates and health care providers a-delivered over 10,000 signatures in support of House Bill 51, removing ourtdated and unenforceable language criminalizing New Mexico health care providers. Reproductive health care is not a crime, and I am proud to stand with women across New Mexico in support of HB 51.”
After the devastating defeat at the New Mexico legislature, Gov. Lujan Grisham wasn’t going to let this current crisis go to waste.
During the current COVID-19 crisis in New Mexico, the governor has deemed abortion facilities “essential” and allowed them to remain open, but has deemed Churches “non-essential” and forced them to close.
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries.”
Meanwhile, The Archdiocese of Santa Fe has been especially hard hit due to the current shut-down imposed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
“The Archdiocese says it’s struggling to make payroll since parishes haven’t been able to gather collections since the state public health orders prohibit in-person services.”
In addition, for Catholics, the ability to meet and receive communion is a cornerstone of their faith. The Church’s purpose is to bring souls to salvation and minister to the poor and needy, but Christians can’t fulfill these purposes when the governor deems fellowship, community and service to others as non-essential activities.

On March 25, a spokesperson from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office issued the following statement by phone to Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico,
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries.”
Abortions are absolutely elective and non-essential and have no place in a civilized society. The fact that it is tolerated is a shame to our state and our nation.
In southern New Mexico, Franz Theard was busy moving his grisly abortion machine across state lines to defy the state of Texas’ orders to stop the killing of unborn children, and at least one woman has been injured, during her abortion, on the New Mexico side.

We launched Faith to Action Friday in March of 2019, now after a year, the media decided to publish a news report on our prayerful protest presence out at The University of New Mexico’s free-standing abortion facility UNM Center For Reproductive Health (UNMCRH).
It took a global pandemic for the media to take notice!
According to the report,
“The anti-abortion group Abortion Free New Mexico called the protest, “Faith to Action Friday.” According to the groups’ website, protestors were asked to gather from noon to 1 p.m. to protest the fact that abortion is considered an essential service in New Mexico.”
Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico, issued the following statement to local media concerning our Good Friday Protest:

This month, Abortion Free New Mexico joined hundreds of concerned New Mexicans and small business owners on April 24, 2020 at Civic Plaza in Downtown Albuquerque for the NM Freedom Rally – Operation Gridlock NM.

You may be surprised that state tax dollars are used to kill New Mexico’s children since the Hyde Amendment prevents federal dollars from directly funding the deadly procedures. However, New Mexico’s abortion facilities are taking full advantage of this state funding loophole. But why should the state force us to pay for other peoples abortions when we have religious and moral objections to it?
Until we have the right leadership to make New Mexico Abortion Free, we must rise up to let our voices be heard and protest the use of our tax dollars that are funding this modern holocaust. In doing so, babies lives will be saved and the hearts of those in our community will be changed after seeing the truth.
Sadly, the abortion industry and their supporters, which include the majority of state legislators and pro-abortion members of clergy in New Mexico, are very proud that New Mexico is drawing women from all across the world to Albuquerque for abortions. It’s unfortunately a booming business that is embraced with pride.

For us, the coronavirus outbreak has given us a chance to have to be at home, which has actually been nice. It seems like we’ve been so busy lately, it is an election season after all. Since we homeschool, our mornings are already reserved for learning, so we have just limited taking the kids out in order to avoid big crowds at stores and indoor play areas. It has also given us a chance to talk with our children about the situation at hand. About how to trust in the Lord and be considerate of others.

We have maintained our presence outside of UNM’s abortion facility and have a special action item in our April Newsletter (linked below) to call for New Mexico officials to halt abortions in the state.
“Anti-abortion organization Abortion Free New Mexico wrote a post ‘calling on all New Mexico abortion providers, including publicly funded University of New Mexico, to halt elective abortion procedures during the current state of emergency.’”

This month, during a press conference at the White House,
“Vice President Mike Pence has called on hospitals to delay all elective procedures across the country to help ensure medical capacity is focused on stemming the spread of the coronavirus.”
Locally, other health agencies are following this recommendation. The New Mexico Dental Association is recommending that dental offices consider suspending non-essential and non-urgent dental care.
Abortions are performed routinely up to 32 weeks of pregnancy and sometimes beyond as elective procedures in the city of Albuquerque. It is for this reason that New Mexico is known as the late term abortion capital of the nation. Other health agencies are taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, yet the abortion industry is taking no such measures, even though they are offering non-essential elective procedures.
So this month, we called on all New Mexico abortion providers to halt elective abortion procedures during the current state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak,
“Abortion Free New Mexico is calling on the University of New Mexico, in addition to all New Mexico abortion providers, to immediately stop all elective abortions during the current state of emergency in the state. The University of New Mexico operates a free-standing abortion facility, The UNM Center of Reproductive Health that conducts elective abortions up to 24 weeks gestation. New Mexico tax dollars and medical resources can be better allocated to individuals facing immediate life threatening complications stemming from the coronavirus outbreak. Abortions are elective procedures and as such should be halted immediately throughout New Mexico.”
We also joined with Created Equal and other national organizations in calling upon the governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), and governors across the country to immediately shut down abortion facilities to #StopTheSpread of COVID-19.
Not only are these facilities consuming scarce personal protective equipment, they risk spreading COVID-19 throughout New Mexico. Furthermore, abortionists themselves are not immune to COVID-19 in fact, Operation Rescue reported that, Three Abortionists Admit Symptoms Consistent with COVID19 as Abortion Facilities Ignore Health Risks. These facilities also put a burden on community EMTs and hospital ERs, should they have a medical emergency at one of their locations.
Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,
New Mexico will soon become ground zero for the spread of COVID-19 across the nation because of the states abortion tourism which draws women here from all across the nation. New Mexico offers elective abortions up to 32 weeks of pregnancy, and throughout all nine months on a case by case basis. It’s no secret that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) is a champion for elective late term abortions, but she needs to recognize the danger that is being posed here if abortions do not halt immediately. Abortion Free New Mexico wants every life to be protected and that is why we are urging the the New Mexico governor, Attorney General and Department of Health to work together to stop elective abortions which will inevitably contribute to the spread of the coronavirus throughout the nation.
In addition to contacting our Governor and the New Mexico Department of Health, we also filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Attorney General.

According to LifeNews.com, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves urged the state’s only abortion facility to close and comply with a state order postponing all elective medical procedures due to the coronavirus.
Governor Reeves issued the following statement,
We’re doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children. We’ll take whatever action we need to to protect not only the lives of unborn children, but also the lives of anyone who may contract this particular virus.

Santa Teresa, New Mexico- On March 22, 2020 Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order halting all elective surgeries including abortions throughout the state of Texas. In response, abortionist Franz Theard, in the middle of the night, packed up his D&C suction aspirator that is used to kill babies at his El Paso, Texas abortion clinic and transferred it across state lines to his Santa, Teresa location in New Mexico.
Meanwhile in New Mexico, Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico contacted Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office for a response to our call for abortions to halt during the governor’s declared state of emergency that has shuttered Churches, businesses, and all non-essential services.
A spokesperson from Governor Lujan Grisham’s office issued the following statement by phone,
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries. All the clinics are sanitizing very well and they are not going to close.”
While Texas, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Maryland governors have issued similar orders ending all elective abortions, New Mexico’s governor is falsely claiming that abortions are not elective procedures. Lujan Grisham is ignoring the fact that women are traveling here from out of state and are potentially spreading the corona virus in their travels.
Abortion Injury Documented Today
As Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham claims that abortion facilities in New Mexico are “sanitizing very well” implying that they are safe, today Southwest Coalition For Life shared a video of a woman leaving the Hill Top abortion facility in Santa Teresa, NM who appears to have had an abortion related injury. One of Hill Top’s nurses accompanied the woman and her driver to what we assume is one of the local hospitals.
“This incident shows the blatant disregard of abortion profiteers not only for women’s safety, but for the general public. Elective medical procedures have been halted to flatten the curve and ensure the best care is available for those afflicted during this pandemic. Franz Theard’s audacious noncompliance with Governor Abbott’s directive combined with Governor Grisham’s failure to halt these elective procedures in New Mexico are now draining the very resources that Governor Abbott intended to reserve and are increasing the risk of exposure for this unnecessarily-injured woman and all those around her. Doctors performing elective abortions should practice social distancing by staying home to save lives like everyone else. Not only will more high-risk persons be saved from the natural evil of coronavirus, but preborn babies will be saved from the moral evil of abortion,” stated Mark Cavaliere, Founder & Executive Director at Southwest Coalition for Life.
Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,
“Governor Lujan Grisham can’t pretend to care about the safety of New Mexicans as long as abortion clinics in the state remain open. Abortions are elective procedures and to say otherwise is simply not true. For decades the pro-abortion community has been a champion for “choice” yet all of the sudden in the midst of a pandemic they have changed their tune. New Mexico leadership needs to realize what is at stake here and instead of placing some lives over others, every life should be valued. Babies are dying and women are being injured and there is no excuse for either.”
Please continue to call Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office and ask her to reconsider and to close down New Mexico’s abortion facilities.
Albuquerque, New Mexico- Last week Abortion Free New Mexico called on all New Mexico abortion providers to halt elective abortion procedures during the current state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Since then, the state of Ohio has ordered abortion clinics to stop providing all abortion procedures, which are non-essential and elective surgeries, each one taking the life of an innocent child.
According to CBS NEWS,
On Friday, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost sent letters to two facilities that provide abortion — Women’s Med Center in Dayton and Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio’s Cincinnati Surgery Center — ordering them to stop providing any services, like abortion, that require the use of personal protective equipment.”
“You and your facility are ordered to immediately stop performing non-essential and elective surgical abortions. Non-essential surgical abortions are those that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient,” Yost wrote in the letter, which was shared with CBS News.
Created Equal, along with other Pro-Life and Pro-Family groups in Ohio, worked with Governor Mike DeWine, the Attorney General, and the Ohio Department of Health to issue a Cease-and-Desist Order to all abortion facilities in the state to comply with Ohio’s directives regarding COVID-19.

We have prayerfully decided to postpone our Quarterly Fellowship Potluck scheduled on March 21st due to concerns raised by the corona virus outbreak. We think it is best to limit social contact for a short period of time to prevent the spread of this virus regardless of how life threatening it may or may not be. There are too many unknown variables and until we have better information we are erring on the side of life.

Faith to Action Friday Is Unfazed by the Corona Virus! Our Prayer and Protest will continue (outside venue)

As we were reflecting this month on nearly a decade of ministry in New Mexico, we came across a 2013 article from The American Prospect, it was titled:
Anti-Choicers’ New Mexico Experiment: Can abortion opponents turn a moderate state with liberal abortion laws into the next battleground?”
It goes on to state in part that,
Compared with its neighbors’ abortion policies, New Mexico’s is practically socialist.

We know it’s a God thing that after all of these years of hard work, abortion is front and center in New Mexico politics. The majority of the candidates who are running are strongly pro-life and defending life in New Mexico is now a top priority. Thanks to you, God has answered our prayer request for godly candidates to rise up and run for office. We now have the privilege to help and support these candidates, who are also our friends, get elected. The 2020 election is important on so many levels, so we hope that you are encouraged and inspired by our efforts to make sure that the candidates who will work to save babies lives are elected.

On Saturday, February 8, 2020, Abortion Free New Mexico attended the “We The People Unity Rally,” where New Mexicans from all across the state gathered to stand together and send a unified message to legislators to stand up for conservative values this session. Our attendance demonstrated that we are committed to moving forward in a unified effort combining forces with fellow conservative and patriot groups to help turn New Mexico Red in 2020!
This month we also continued our efforts going door to door, collecting signatures for conservative pro-life candidates, registering voters, and helping to collect contributions for 4 conservative judges (2 supreme court and 2 appellate court). It is vitally important for us to help get these judges to the New Mexico bench.
According to Giovanna Eisberg of the Republican Party of New Mexico,
“Here is an important fact; we have the ability to elect 2 republicans for the supreme court and if we are successful, we will have the first republican majority on the NM Supreme Court in over a 100 years! The two court of appeals candidates if elected will give is a very strong republican presence on the court of appeals.”
NOT ENOUGH VOTES, PRO-DEATH AGENDA TABLED THIS SESSION!
Santa Fe, NM- “We simply do not have the votes” Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe. As we reported at the start of the 2020 legislative session, the pro-death agenda (HB 51 Decriminalize Abortion and HB 90 Legalize Assisted Suicide) was not introduced due to the lack of votes! Governor Lujan Grisham’s radical pro-death agenda was tabled this session and LIFE once again prevails! Thanks to those who are standing together in solidarity to defend the sanctity of LIFE including Republican legislators and Pro-Life Catholic Democrat legislators.

This month when President Donald J. Trump spoke about ending late term abortion at the State Of The Union (SOTU), understand that he’s talking about New Mexico (as it’s ground zero in America for late term abortion).
Tara and I, along with Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, have been working tirelessly to expose the radical abortion agenda here in New Mexico for nearly decade! In fact, we coined the phrase and designated Albuquerque as the “Late Term Abortion Capital” based on our groundbreaking research and investigations with the help of Operation Rescue.
Our efforts over the past decade have been featured in TIME, The New York Times, The Associated Press (AP) and even CNN!
In fact, this month we joined Michelle Garcia Holmes, who is running for US Congress (CD-1), at the Bernalillo County Pre-Primary Convention. At the convention, Tara and I became delegates with the republican party of New Mexico so that we can cast our vote for the candidates we want to see on the ballot.
We encourage you to be involved in supporting candidates in your area and to figure out ways that you can be more involved since this is such an important election year.
It is so encouraging to see so many godly candidates rise up to defend life and represent our values across New Mexico and in Washington D.C. They are going to need all kinds of help to get elected.
Our long time friend and local Pastor, Manny is running for the New Mexico Senate. Tara will be serving as his Treasurer and we are excited about his campaign. Manny shares all of our Christian values and really wants to see the kingdom of God advanced in his community and in the lives of his constituents. Albuquerque, New Mexico- In February, several people stopped to talk with us because hey were shocked to learn from our signs that UNM, a tax funded university, uses our tax dollars for their radical abortion agenda.
In fact, a physicist who recently moved here from Alaska was thankful that we were peacefully protesting and was very curious about how his tax dollars are being used. We are always blessed to have newcomers join us because together we are a stronger voice for life at theses places of death.
