By Tara Shaver Albuquerque, NM- Since 1998 New Mexico taxpayers have been footing the bill for women to have abortions through New Mexico Medicaid. Per the Hyde Amendment, federal money is prohibited from being used to pay for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or life endangerment of the mother, so New Mexico became one of 17 states that uses state money to pay for abortions. New Mexico is one of 13 states that does so as a result of a court order.
