Caught Red-Handed: New Mexico Abortion Business Was Operating Illegally

    By Cheryl Sullenger, Operation Rescue

    URGENT ACTION ALERT!

Operation Rescue urges the City of Las Cruces to revoke the abortion facility’s business permit due to deception and possible zoning violations.

Las Cruces, NM – A new abortion facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, operated by the Texas-based Whole Women’s Health abortion chain, was caught “red-handed” operating without a valid business permit in an area that may not be properly zoned for that business.

Seeking to avoid safety standards in Texas that shut down two of its five Texas abortion centers, Whole Women’s Health targeted New Mexico where an absence of abortion laws allows even the most disreputable to run abortion businesses without fear of inspection or oversight.

Whole Women’s Health (WWH) soon set up shop in Las Cruces where it could continue its substandard operations without accountability.

Operation Rescue, working with Protest ABQ and local pro-life leaders in Las Cruces, has documented that Whole Women’s Health, operating as “William H. Richardson, MD, PC” opened for business and conducted surgical abortions prior to applying to the City of Las Cruces for a business permit.

In fact, recorded phone conversations show that the facility staff used deception first to pass off an invalid business permit as their own, then to deny that it had opened for business.

In phone call placed by Tara Shaver of Protest ABQ on October 16, 2014, a clinic employee told Shaver that they had been open about a week. She then scheduled Shaver for a surgical abortion on October 21.

However, records show that the abortion facility did not even apply for a permit until October 23 and did not receive a valid business permit until October 27.

There are also concerns that Whole Women’s Health and Richardson are operating in a building that is not zoned for major surgeries such as late-term abortions, which are soon to be available at the Las Cruces center.

“There can be no doubt that Whole Women’s Health was conducting business and providing surgical abortions prior to applying for a valid business permit,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “We caught them red-handed breaking the law and using deception to cover it up.”

Operation Rescue is encouraging the public to contact the City of Las Cruces and ask that they immediately revoke the business permit issued to Richardson due to safety concerns and given the checkered history of the Whole Women’s Health abortion chain in Texas with which his abortion business is affiliated.

New Mexico governor Susana Martinez has come under fire from anti-abortion groups for not doing enough to help their cause.”

“What good is having a governor that will only give lip service to the Prolife cause? We must hold her feet to the fire!” Cheryl Sullenger, Senior Policy Advisor at Operation Rescue

Here is a sneak peak of the hard-hitting piece by Cosmopolitan…

“Does a local group like Protest ABQ have enough clout that their disapproval could keep a politician off a short list for higher office? It’s difficult to say. On the one hand, it is just a few dozen “no-exceptions” anti-abortion activists from a low-population state. On the other, the Shavers were sent to the city at the request of Operation Rescue in Kansas and make up just one strand of a tight web of extreme pro-life groups that believe in protecting life from fertilization to natural death, groups that exist all throughout the country — from the Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust in California to Priests for Life in New York. It’s a nationwide network that is highly engaged in electoral politics and grassroots campaigning.”

UPDATE: Your Public Outcry Was Heard…UNM Apologizes for “Sex Week”

Public Protest and Outcry Works…A BIG Thank YOU To All Of YOU!

We thank UNM for their public apology and acknowledgement that “Sex Week” is in fact truly offensive.

    UNM statement regarding ‘Sex Week’

“The Women’s Resource Center and the Graduate and Professional Students Association were well intended in creating the workshops billed as “Sex Week.” However, the initiative did not have clear oversight or close enough supervision to prevent the inclusion of topics that are sensational and controversial. For that UNM apologizes.

While the university administration believes that it is important to offer opportunities for sex education to college students, it should be done in a careful and respectful manner. We will do a better job in the future of vetting and selecting programs offered through campus groups.”

Lobos of Death: A Look at the Radical Abortion Agenda at the University of New Mexico

This is the second installment in a series of exposés highlighting the UNM’s involvement in the Abortion Cartel. (Read Part One)

By Tara Shaver, Project Defending Life

Albuquerque, NM- The University of New Mexico (UNM) is at the heart of the abortion industry in the Land of Enchantment.

During our four years of work in Albuquerque, the home of the Lobos, we discovered that the abortion culture is deeply entrenched at this publicly-funded institution and expanding – all at taxpayers’ expense.

Little can New Mexico afford to pour hundreds of thousands of hard-earned tax dollars in to UNM’s abortion business. It is one of the poorest states in the nation, ranking Number 1 for child hunger and Number 2 for adult hunger according to the Huffington Post. In 2013, New Mexico ranked last in the nation for child well-being, climbing only one spot to 49th in 2014.

Could it be that New Mexico’s flagship institution is contributing to these troubling statistics by wasting its resources on its enormous abortion program?

“Our tax dollars would be better spent actually helping to bring children out of poverty instead of being doled out to the University of New Mexico to kill them,” said Bud Shaver of Project Defending Life.

    Deadly Expansion

In 2007, UNM launched its free-standing abortion clinic, the UNM Center for Reproductive Health (UNMCRH), which conducts abortions up to 22 weeks gestation, or over half way through pregnancy.

In addition to this off-campus freestanding abortion clinic, there is also a clinic on campus performing abortions up to 11.5 weeks gestation. Known as the Family Practice Center, it offers specialized services in ObGyn through the Department of Family Practice at UNM.

Essentially UNM is running two abortions clinics.

On April 1, 2014, the UNMCRH opened a new 8,000 square-foot facility that was approved by the UNM Medical Group Finance Committee and Council of Chairs. UNMCRH is managed by the UNM Medical Group, a 501c3 non-profit corporation, and is staffed by UNM Hospital physicians.

While 6,000 feet of this new facility is dedicated to the UNMCRH for abortions, 2,000 feet is designated to a newly formed Young Women’s Center, which is a collaboration between the ObGyn and Pediatrics Departments. A call placed to the YWC staff revealed that the center is primarily a birth control clinic for minors.

“When minor children fail to use birth control or exercise poor judgment that minor children are known to do from time to time, they become ready customers for the UNM’s abortion business,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, which partners with Project Defending Life. “It is troubling that the UNM would be exploiting children in this way.”

But the exploitation doesn’t stop there.

UNM also has a presence through School Based Health Centers in two Albuquerque high schools, three middle schools, and one elementary school. The Adolescent Division of UNM proudly boasts that their “physicians are comfortable seeing teenagers with any sort of problem, from acne to contraception.”

There can be no doubt that UNM has a specific agenda to promote the abortion culture to minors, which should be extremely troubling to the parents of these young people.

    Abortion Training and the ACGME

UNM is currently one of 68 universities that participate in the Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Program in Abortion and Family Planning. The Ryan Program, founded in 1999, is a national initiative whose mission is to embed abortion training into residency programs throughout the United States and Canada.

In 1996, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) mandated that ob-gyn residency education must include access to experience with induced abortion. This mandate has become an excuse for keeping UNM’s free standing abortion clinic open.

However, ACGME Obstetrics and Gynecology Program Requirement IV.A.2.d states:

No program or resident with a religious or moral objection shall be required to provide training in or to perform induced abortions. Otherwise, access to experience with induced abortion must be part of residency education. This education can be provided outside the institution. [Emphasis added]

It is clear that UNM is not required to run their own freestanding abortion clinic to train medical residents to perform abortions.

The ACGME further states that abortion training programs are required to provide residents with the ability to “opt out” of the programs and even acknowledges that there may be instances where every resident declines to participate in abortion training.

Because of this, Project Defending Life recently launched an ad campaign in the UNM Daily Lobo, the official campus newspaper, informing students of their right to decline to participate in abortion training and encouraging students to exercise their right to opt-out.

    Funding

If abortion training at a UNM facility isn’t mandatory, why is UNM so determined to keep the UNMCRH running? Perhaps the motive is where the profit is.

UNMCRH has an average annual revenue of nearly $2 million. So far in 2014, the clinic has brought in $1.7 million, with $750,000 of that being paid out by New Mexico’s Medicaid program. That means 44% of UNMCRH’s income comes from state Medicaid coffers.

Furthermore, 2013 New Mexico Medicaid information obtained through a public records request shows that 17 of the 34 abortionists that received state Medicaid funding for abortions were UNM employees.

UNM is propagating an agenda of death using taxpayer money earmarked for healthcare that is in no way benefitting the health of the citizens of New Mexico.

UNM has demonstrated its commitment to promote and expand abortion in this poverty-ridden state through training of new abortionists and the exploitation of minors through their new Young Women’s Center and public school birth control clinics.

In case there is any further doubt of UNM’s deep commitment to the killing of innocent children in the womb, this year, it promoted abortionist Eve Espy of the UNMCRH to ObGyn Chair for the UNM School of Medicine. In validation of Espy’s radical abortion agenda, she was presented with the 2014 Margaret Sanger Award by New Mexico Planned Parenthood for “her leadership and outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement in New Mexico.”

The centerpiece of her contributions, unmentioned by Planned Parenthood, was more dead New Mexico children.

“Abortion currently touches all aspects of The University of New Mexico, a publicly funded institution. Why should the people of New Mexico be taxed to support UNM and not know about UNM’s involvement in pre-born child killing? Why should the people of New Mexico be given no opportunity to decide how they want their most prestigious institution and only medical school to represent their standards and values? Now is the time to end Albuquerque’s reputation as the Abortion Capital of the Southwest and the Late Term Abortion Capital of the Nation starting with UNM. We urge them to abandon their radical abortion agenda,” stated Fr. Stephen Imbarrato Founder of Project Defending Life.

Members of Project Defending Life have met with UNM Regents, including the Board of Regents President Jack Fortner, and the Health Sciences Center Dean, Paul Roth, to express concerns about the blatant disregard for human life at UNM. Unfortunately, those meetings were to no avail.

We invite the public to voice concerns about the UNM’s heavy involvement in abortion to Dr. Paul Roth.

Call To Action: UNM Pushes Depraved Sex Agenda

    By Tara Shaver

Albuquerque, NM- The University of New Mexico is hosting it’s first ever “Sex Week” starting today. The store manager at Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center in Albuquerque is collaborating with the on campus Women’s Resource Center to organize this weeks events.

This year’s theme is said to be preventing sexual assault but the events are being promoted to celebrate shame free sex with seminars titled “How to be a Gentleman AND Get Laid” and “Reid’s Negotiating Successful Threesomes.”

UNM has had a history of sexual assaults; the most recent accusation came from a student earlier this year. In July 2014 the ABQ Journal Newspaper reported that “According to UNM’s website, where its stats are posted, two sexual assaults were reported in 2008; six in 2009; two in both 2010 and 2011; and four in 2012. Numbers for 2013 will come out around September, according to Lt. Tim Stump, public information officer for UNM police”.

However, 1 in 5 students nationwide – usually female – are sexually assaulted during their college years. There is a disturbing trend on college campuses and cases of sexual assault. Over sexualizing students does not seem to be a positive preventative method. This week’s events will likely only drive students to be more sexually active and creates a climate on campus, which results in heightened sexual assault, sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies and inevitably abortion.

While these events are getting a varied response from students on campus, the general public should be asking UNM, “Why we the tax payer should be forced to fund such activities at a public institution?”

Please contact the UNM President and Dean of Students and respectfully tell them that UNM should not be sexualizing students on the taxpayer’s dime and allowing a climate to be created with which sexual assaults can arise.

Sept. 2014 Newsletter: “Never Grow Weary in Doing What’s Right”

In 2009-2010 while working as interns with Operation Rescue, Bud and I worked on various projects. One of those was to compile an accurate updated list of free standing abortion clinics in the US, you can access this data at abortiondocs.com. This project revealed that over 70% of abortion clinics have closed since 1991.  While compiling this data, Tara called a Planned Parenthood in Iowa and discovered “telemed abortions.”

Telemed abortion is a process where dangerous abortion pills are dispensed via teleconferencing hook-up. An abortionist sits in front of a webcam and pushes a button to electronically open a drawer in the faraway clinic containing the drugs. A licensed physician never physically examines the woman at anytime.

Operation Rescue did their part in alerting authorities in Iowa and things started happening to change the law there. Shortly after this discovery we went to Iowa and during an interview that I did with Iowa Public Radio Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) revealed that expanding medical abortions into every Planned Parenthood clinic in the country through the use of the “telemed abortion” scheme was part of PPFA’s Strategic Plan for 2015.  This according to Operation Rescue would have represented the, “largest expansion of abortion services since Roe v. Wade.” We had no idea where this research would lead but as a result 13 other states have subsequently restricted telemed abortions.

  • Tax Funded Abortions on the Rise in New Mexico While Overall Abortions on the Decline

Tax Funded Abortions on the Rise in New Mexico While Overall Abortions on the Decline

    By Tara Shaver

Albuquerque, NM — Since 2008, New Mexico’s abortion rate has been on a steady decline. This is great news in a state where abortions are performed through all nine months of pregnancy without restriction. However, that news is tempered by the fact that abortions funded by tax dollars are on the rise.

According to New Mexico vital statistics, 3,134 abortions were performed in 2012, a significant decrease of 2,002 abortions from 2008 figures when 5,136 abortions were performed. This represents a 39 percent decrease in abortions over a five-year period.

This overall reduction in abortion can be attributed to public outreach through ministries like Project Defending Life, whose efforts include prayer and protests at local abortion clinics and serving women when they choose not to abort. Also, education has played a big role in decreasing abortion at a city level in Albuquerque, home to 3 of the 5 remaining abortion clinics in the state, through church outreach and a steady stream of local media coverage of abortion injuries and the lack of clinical oversight.

“When the community at large knows how precarious abortions are and when women themselves know the risks involved, women choose not to pursue an abortion. Since New Mexico has adopted no common-sense legislation regarding abortion, all of the successes must be attributed to those who faithfully work day in and day out to end abortions one woman and child at a time,” stated Bud Shaver, Executive Director of Protest ABQ.

While overall abortion numbers have decreased, tax funded abortions through New Mexico Medicaid saw a 20 percent increase over the previous year’s numbers. New Mexico is one of 15 states to fully fund abortions, not using any federal funds but state funds. This forces everyday citizens to foot the bill for dangerous and deadly abortions.

In 2013, 811 abortions were billed to the state, costing taxpayers $160,007.51.

The largest portion of these abortions was performed at the state’s late term abortion clinic, Southwestern Women’s Options where the very latest of abortions are done. SWO employs Susan Robinson and Shelley Sella who reside in California; their net income in 2013 from New Mexico Medicaid was $74,770.78 for performing 335 abortions.

The University of New Mexico performed 126 Medicaid funded abortions in 2013, which cost taxpayers $24,729.65.

Protest ABQ has prepared the chart that details the amounts paid to abortion providers in New Mexico for abortions in 2013.

Each year that goes by without any action from the state’s legislature and Governor, out-of-state abortionists will continue to bilk New Mexico taxpayers while evading their own state’s laws that prohibit the very abortion procedures that are so profitable for them in New Mexico. This is just another way New Mexico has become the “go to” place for extremely late abortions, drawing not only out-of-state abortionists but also women seeking abortions beyond the legal limits in their home states.

This report is being published one week after members of Protest ABQ met with Governor Susana Martinez, once again urging her to reign in the out of control and unregulated abortion industry that is costing tax payers big money in New Mexico.

Protest ABQ is leading the charge to protect life and is calling on pro-life groups to join us for a National Call to Action involving national protests against abortion, culminating with a National Strike on January 22, 2015.

“We need to stand up and ‘protest’ to bring about the end of pre-born child killing. . .peacefully but protest! Until all those who oppose pre-born child killing are willing to go into the streets in ‘protest’ of what we know is wrong and unless we are willing to call and enact a ‘national strike’ to end the child killing, this will all remain legal,” stated Fr. Stephen Imbarrato Founder of Protest ABQ.

    ________
Note: The video in this story was made in 2011 and revealed at that time that New Mexico taxpayers were being forced to foot the bill for expensive late-term abortions on babies with Down Syndrome. This practice not only continues today, but is on the increase.

Pro-Life Missionaries: Redefining the “American Mission Field”

Tara and I met at a Bible College in Texas where God gave us a heart for the mission field. Tara spent a year in Nottingham, England and I (Bud) was ordained and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Missions. I spent an additional 6 months in an Advanced Missions program where my concentration was on “domestic” missions. Tara and I married shortly after Tara returned from England and since then we have worked in full-time pastoral ministry, traveled the country for a year with Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust visiting over 180 high schools and colleges across the country educating our peers about the injustice of abortion, and spent a year in Wichita, Kansas as interns for Operation Rescue (OR) where we learned the most effective and proven strategies for ending abortion! After our year as interns for OR our mission field became Albuquerque, New Mexico due to the fact that our research revealed that it was…the Abortion Capital of the Southwest and the Late-Term Abortion Capital of America.

We moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2010 (by invitation of Project Defending Life) to expose and fight the radical abortion agenda entrenched in this state. Research about abortion abuses in New Mexico, by Tara Shaver: Important Facts about Abortion in New Mexico and Abortion Abuses

Top Ten Victories of 2011:  #3 New Mexico Abortion Cartel Exposed

After the closure of the late-term abortion clinic in Wichita, KS, Operation Rescue learned that two of the abortionists from the Kansas clinic were relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two of our interns, Bud and Tara Shaver, felt the call of God to move to Albuquerque and work to stop abortions there. The Shavers now work with Project Defending Life, a group that works in cooperation with Operation Rescue to expose abortion abuses in New Mexico.

Together, the groups uncovered and exposed a series of 911 calls that were evidence of life-threatening abortion complications at two Albuquerque abortion clinics. Complaints were filed with the Medical Board and the investigation into these unsafe clinics is progressing. In addition, the role of the University of New Mexico in the abortion industry has been fully documented, and efforts are underway to convince the UNM Regents to cease all participation in abortion and abortion training.

Year in Review: Top Ten Victories from 2012

Shelley Sella, faced a disciplinary hearing before the New Mexico Medical Board in November for gross negligence in a 35 week abortion where Sella overused uterine contracting drugs on a woman with a history of a previous Caesarian Section, resulting in a ruptured uterus. Sella faces possible license revocation. The injury was discovered when former OR intern Tara Shaver obtained the 911 call records. OR and Mrs. Shaver filed complaints resulting in the Board action.

2013:  Bud and Tara Shaver Named Operation Rescue’s 2013 Pro-Life Persons of the Year

Albuquerque, NM – Pro-life missionaries Bud and Tara Shaver, of Project Defending Life in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have been named as recipients of the 2013 Pro-life Person of the Year Malachi Award in recognition of their outstanding work in bringing the matter of late-term abortions into the national spotlight.

After an internship with Operation Rescue, the Shavers moved to Albuquerque in 2010 to expose late-term abortions at Southwestern Women’s Options, one of the few abortion clinics in the nation that openly conduct abortions throughout the full nine months of pregnancy.

Tara’s ground-breaking research documented evidence of numerous life-threatening abortion emergencies and other abuses at that late-term abortion facility. She also uncovered that state taxpayers are forced to foot the bill for late-term procedures at the cost of thousands of dollars each.

Information gathered by the Shavers became the basis of a citizen’s petition to amend the City of Albuquerque’s charter to ban abortions after 20 weeks gestation, when babies are known to feel pain. That initiative was the first-ever attempt to ban an abortion procedure at the municipal level. Tara and Bud Shaver spearheaded a grass roots signature drive that garnered a record 27,000 in just 20 days to place the late-term abortion ban on the ballot, then established a Political Action Committee that campaigned in favor of it.

While the Albuquerque Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance failed to pass during a November 19 city-wide vote, the Shavers, who served as national media spokespersons for the effort, contributed significantly to an increased awareness of late-term abortions in New Mexico an across the nation.

The Malachi Award is given by Operation Rescue every year to recognize individuals who sacrificially work to advance the cause of protecting the pre-born.

2014: Group launches new anti-abortion campaign (KOB Eyewitness News 4): Protest ABQ www.protestABQ.com

“As we move forward in Albuquerque, we realize that abortion will end in our city and state, when hearts are touched and minds are changed concerning the killing of the most innocent and defenseless children in our state, those in the womb. PROTEST ABQ is a way to raise this public awareness. If we accomplish nothing else, we must succeed in protesting the evil of our generation…legalized child killing,” stated Bud Shaver, Executive Director at PROTEST ABQ.

It is not surprising that those who advocate such violence lash out violently toward those who are trying to end it. • 16th Botched Abortion at Late Term Abortion Clinic In ABQ!

16th Botched Abortion at Late Term Abortion Clinic In ABQ!

Albuquerque, NM- At 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 27th an ambulance arrived at late term abortion mill Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO) and spent 20 minutes inside the clinic before bringing a woman out on a gurney completely covered by a sheet. The woman was rushed to the hospital and her condition is unknown.

On February 13, 2014 another woman was rushed to the hospital from SWO. This is the 16th botched abortion that we’ve documented since 2008 at SWO and the 2nd in two months. Women will continue to be injured at this clinic until it is closed in the interest of the public safety.

“We are also very concerned about any possibility that these injuries may be related to the Ryan Residency Training Program at the University of New Mexico that allows medical students to perform abortions in a clinical setting, which all 3 Albuquerque abortion clinics are participating in,” stated Fr. Imbarrato, Founder of Project Defending Life and Protest ABQ.

New Mexico abortion clinics are completely unregulated and lack any oversight from state and local authorities which continues to put women’s lives at risk.Since the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Medical Board refuse to protect unsuspecting women seeking abortions we rely solely upon those who volunteer their time at local abortion clinics to document these injuries. It is long overdue that local and state authorities acknowledge and act on this serious crisis.

“Our prayers are with this woman and those like her who will continue to be injured at Southwestern Women’s Options. Those in authority in New Mexico who continue to turn a blind eye to the abortion crisis here in Albuquerque bear direct responsibility due to their inaction,” said Tara Shaver of Project Defending Life.

  • Local News Channel KOB- 4 Coverage of PROTEST ABQ Launch

Local News Channel KOB- 4 Coverage of PROTEST ABQ Launch

    News Coverage by KOB 4:

“The group that launched a campaign to ban late term abortions in Albuquerque says they are here to stay.

In fact, they are inviting national pro-life groups to come work with them too, and they hope Albuquerque will be a catalyst for the rest of the nation.

“Protest ABQ” will be a public awareness campaign. Organizers plan to publicize what they call “abortion victim photography,” and will protest Monday through Friday in front of a UNM clinic that provides abortions. They say they will do it until the clinic closes.

“We gave the city a chance to stand for life, to protect these babies, but the city failed and so now we’re realizing we need to reach back into the city with education and just a measure of exposing who it is that’s helping to keep abortions in our community,” Tara Shaver said.

Shaver says part of that “education” will mean showing people images of allegedly aborted fetuses.

“The killing of babies in the womb is offensive. We should be offended that it’s happening. Instead of being upset about showing the images, we should be upset about what the images depict. The images are truthful, they’re real and this is the very evil that we’re fighting against,” Shaver said.”

  • PROTEST ABQ: Successful Launch and a HUGE Development!

PROTEST ABQ: Successful Launch and a HUGE Development!

(A Press Conference will be held Tuesday, March 18th at 4:00pm MT in front of the NEW location for the UNMCRH abortion clinic.)

Albuquerque, NM- On March 11th after several weeks of training local activists Protest ABQ had a very successful launch. Over 50 of you showed up to be a strong voice for the babies outside of the UNM Center for Reproductive Health abortion mill (UNMCRH). The Protest ABQ campaign has been working hard to wake up this city to the killing of babies that takes place daily and has been very effective so far.

About a year and a half ago we were told by a trusted source that the UNMCRH abortion mill was looking for a new location because Bud’s presence just one day a week was affecting their business. Their exact words to our source were, “We are moving our location because we are being protested.” Shortly thereafter, they declined to renew their lease and began going month to month. Since November 22, 2013, Bud has been faithfully present in front of this abortion mill 5 days a week and in December UNMCRH applied for a permit for their new location.

March 25th will be the last day that the UNMCRH abortion mill will be located at 1701 Moon St! This is a HUGE victory for this neighborhood. Due to Bud’s faithful public presence over the past 3 years, neighborhood residents often voiced their shock and dismay to Bud once they realized that an abortion clinic was killing children each day in their neighborhood. Their question to Bud was often, “How can we get this abortion clinic out of our neighborhood?” Well, PROTEST ABQ has proven to be the answer.

With the recent launch of PROTEST ABQ, our public pressure has proven to be effective and is needed more urgently than ever due to the fact that the UNM Center For Reproductive Health killing center will be fleeing its current location at 1701 Moon St. and will reopen April 1st at 2301 Yale Blvd. SE Building E.

    WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP:
Respectfully contact the UNM Medical Group and let them know that you oppose the UNM Center For Reproductive Health’s new abortion clinic location at 2301 Yale Blvd SE Building E.

Please respectfully contact Al Montano: 505-247-0444 and the UNM Medical Group BEFORE April 1st at this number: 505-272-3203

Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, founder of PROTEST ABQ released the following statement, “This baby killing mill is scheduled to open April 1st. We can keep this mill from opening! The only thing that will allow this mill to change locations and open here is…apathy from the people of ABQ. If the people rise up the way they did for the petition last summer and the referendum, this mill will not open! We need to Protest ABQ and we need to do it now. Join us at the press conference at the new location this Tuesday! All are welcome”

Project Defending Life Launches New Campaign, PROTEST ABQ

By Tara Shaver, Project Defending Life

(We will be hosting a press conference on Tuesday March, 11th at 4pm (MT) at the UNM abortion clinic.)

UPDATED: Group launches new anti-abortion campaign (KOB Eyewitness News 4 Coverage)

Albuquerque, NM- Project Defending Life is announcing a new public awareness campaign: PROTEST ABQ. This new campaign will utilize “abortion victim photography” and other public awareness efforts, in response to the failed ban on Late-Term Abortions on November 19th. Through strategic and sustained focuses PROTEST ABQ is going to reach deeper into our community to educate Albuquerque and New Mexico residents about the businesses and individuals that are keeping abortions in our community.

Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, founder of Project Defending Life issued the following statement,  “It is time to get serious about protesting the killing of our little brothers and sisters in the womb. These protests will be peaceful and constitutionally legal. We will not condone violence of any kind by anyone in this campaign. Indeed, we are protesting the use of violence…against babies in the womb. We will peacefully protest this violence.”

As part of this initiative (PROTEST ABQ) Project Defending Life is inviting all known and recognized pro-life leaders, groups, and ministries to New Mexico to help us. We will host and provide hospitality to any group or ministry including lodging and food for the duration of your stay here. We are welcoming National Pro-Life groups to come to Albuquerque, NM and do the work they do best. The National groups will work under their own ministry or group banner in cooperation with PROTEST ABQ and Project Defending Life.

In the state of New Mexico late term abortions are legal up to the ninth month of pregnancy. These abortions are, in fact, being performed in the city of Albuquerque each week on women who come from all across the nation to obtain them. Since Albuquerque is drawing women from all across the country, Project Defending Life is inviting pro-life groups from all across the nation to come to Albuquerque and join us as we PROTEST ABQ.

While our efforts on Nov. 19th fell short of ending Late-Term abortions in Albuquerque, by maintaining a public and prayerful presence at our local abortion clinics, we have been quite successful at ending abortion one woman, one child, one day at a time. The preliminary abortion numbers for 2012 are 3,134, which is a 627 decrease from 2011 (3761 total) and a 2,590 decrease in abortions in New Mexico since 2007 (5,724 total!)

“As we move forward in Albuquerque, we realize that abortion will end in our city and state, when hearts are touched and minds are changed concerning the killing of the most innocent and defenseless children in our state, those in the womb. PROTEST ABQ is a way to raise this public awareness. If we accomplish nothing else, we must succeed in protesting the evil of our generation…legalized child killing,” stated Bud Shaver spokesperson for PROTEST ABQ.

March Newsletter 2014: New Member of the Shaver Family

This month we have GREAT news to announce…and not so great news!

First the not so great news…

Over the past few months we have been under direct attack from the violent pro-aborts, in fact we recently found out that the sign shop that made all of our campaign (ABQ Voters For Late-Term Abortion Ban) signs for the November 19th election had a bomb EXPLODE while they were at the shop making our campaign signs! Local news station KRQE- 13 reported that it is possible the shop was targeted because it was believed to be our campaign headquarters!

Watch the report from KRQE 13 titled: “FBI investigating Albuquerque pipe bomb explosion

For several months we have been sensing the urgency to increase our family’s security. Even as a young family with children, those who are pro-death will not hesitate to harm us. In order to further protect our family we are asking for you to prayerfully consider a monthly or one-time contribution to make this possible.

Feb. Newsletter 2014: Our Life, A Life Lived In The Fire

After prayer and reflection, moving our pro-life momentum forward in Albuquerque, we believe that UNM free-standing abortion clinic UNMCRH is the weak link of the abortion cartel in ABQ (due to the fact that since UNM is a public institution and publicly funded, they are highly sensitive to public exposure concerning their radical abortion agenda).

Kicking off the new year in 2014 Bud has committed to being out at UNMCRH everyday that they are doing abortions (Mon-Fri). This means that all 3 abortion clinics in our city are consistently covered each week!

Here is a testimony from ministry this month at UNMCRH:

“Our life is best described as a life lived in the fire. Today was just another day in the life of a pro-life activist. When I arrived at UNMCRH there was a new sign posted citing an ABQ ordinance. Obviously this was an attempt to intimidate me into leaving or risk arrest, so of course I stayed, undeterred…. • The Tragedy of Marlise & Her Baby Girl Nicole, Exposes our Pro-Death Culture

    By Tara Shaver

When I became aware of Marlise Munoz, a woman who collapsed in her home one morning while 14 weeks pregnant, I went on high alert. Marlise’s story pierced my heart because after unexpectedly collapsing she was brought to the hospital where I was born. That made it personal for me, but I was also deeply worried about her and her pre-born baby’s lives that hung in the balance. Marlise was diagnosed “brain dead” and her husband and family wanted her removed from life support. You see her husband was convinced that she would never want to be kept alive by life support, but it just so happened that Marlise was pregnant with their second child.  Texas law forbids the removal of life support for pregnant women and I was so thankful that John Peter Smith Hospital was upholding the law and keeping both mom and baby alive, for the time being.

I felt so many emotions as the local and national pro-life community prayed and anticipated the Munoz family’s next move. One on hand a husband and father was demanding that his wife and child be killed, NARAL Pro-Choice America was rallying the hospital to remove life support (one should ask themselves why), yet the pro-life community prayed for this family, and dozens of families offered to adopt the baby. As we waited I was reminded that this was another opportunity to see where this nation stands on the question of life and death. Much like the ABQ election where all eyes watched to see the outcome, I watched to see if this mother and child would be valued in the direst of circumstances.

Doctors had planned to keep mom on life support long enough to deliver baby Munoz, which gave many hope. Sadly though the family didn’t desire this new life, they were instead bent on killing Marlise and convinced that this baby would be born with birth defects due to her condition. Don’t get me wrong I do not advocate the removal of life support, I believe we should err on the side of life and never give up hope.

Inevitably the system failed this mother and child. Marlise’s family, primarily her husband, challenged Texas law and petitioned the court to be able to remove life support. This is where Marlise’s story gets even more tragic, at the court hearing no one showed up in her defense. The District Attorney did not come to her aid and the aid of her baby to plead their case, the family was unopposed and therefore the judge ruled in their favor last Friday and instructed John Peter Smith Hospital to remove life support by Monday, January 27th. How surreal that the hospital in which my life began is now ordered to kill this mother and child.

Sunday morning came and while pro-life groups planned a vigil and sit in at the hospital that afternoon, in hopes that the hospital would appeal the decision, Marlise and her baby girl, Nicole, were killed. (The baby’s gender and name were posted on the public Facebook page of Erick Munoz’s local union, Crowley Professional Firefighters Association L-4182)

I must admit that this tragedy brought me to tears, the realization of just how pro-death our culture is hit me hard. We have reached the point where in addition to the daily occurrence of abortion there is an unquenchable blood thirstiness for the death of the most helpless. While these two were literally aborted by a husband, a father, a judge, district attorney and hospital there are lessons that can be learned by those of us looking on.

    You Can Make Difference

Our battle for all life is first a spiritual one that must be rooted in Christ. Second, we must fight harder than ever before. Lives are slipping away daily across this nation and if we do not rise up in opposition to God’s final enemy, death (1 Corinthians 15:26) we will continue giving God’s enemies the advantage.

My prayer is that all who read this real life story will reflect on what you can do to actively end our pro-death culture. I encourage us all to seek brokenness on behalf of the innocent who are brutally killed daily and to ultimately let God mend your brokenness and change you into a person of resolve. Your voice, passion, time and talent are needed in this battle and there is so much to be done.

We are getting ready to launch “Protest ABQ” where will be more vocal and visible than ever in defense of the babies being killed in our community because enough is enough. We invite you to join us in this important endeavor, but perhaps you are feeling called to serve elsewhere. Project Defending Life is the leading pro-life ministry in the state and one reason we work with this organization and believe in it wholeheartedly is because day in and day out PDL is there. Project Defending Life is actively reaching out to women seeking abortions and bringing them into the ministry to help them choose life and helping them make a better life for themselves.

One of the biggest needs we currently have is for volunteers. Volunteers are needed to run the office and counsel women in crisis situations. Our work on the streets is most effective when we can back up our offer of help to women seeking abortions, but people to meet these women in our office is imperative.

Currently the office is open from 10-2pm Monday-Friday (help is needed during these hours). Women and girls need help after those hours though, in fact, last November I went into PDL after 2pm to pick up something and in 10 minutes time I had two teenage clients (who just got out of school) ring the doorbell asking for pregnancy tests. While I had a meeting to be at (and ended up being late to) I couldn’t turn them away. I could only think to myself that if I didn’t help them they would go next door to Planned Parenthood and likely be misled and lost forever.

Our volunteers are able to make their own flexible schedule. Please don’t let those who need real help and options be left with only the option of Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics.

Contact Maria to volunteer with clients needing counseling, pregnancy tests and ultrasounds.

Contact Jo Ann to volunteer in the office greeting clients and performing other office tasks.

    Sidewalk Testimony: Faithfulness Remains

    by Bud Shaver

I’m out at UNM abortion clinic UNMCRH on a blustery, cold Mon. in January (13th). The wind has significantly minimized the signs I have displayed. I am holding on to two with all my strength, a very graphic one by Created Equal and one I had made spelling out UNM’s radical abortion agenda. Instead of debating whether the use of abortion victim images has a proper role in the public square, I’m just going to share what I just experienced while I was using them. A woman (45-50 years old) in her car glances over at me as she was leaving another business across the street from UNMCRH and all I heard was her clutch grinding into park. She got out of her car and walked straight over to me…I have witnessed alot over the years but this brought a seasoned activist to tears… while I was still holding on to my signs due to the strong winds, she embraced me and wept profusely for several minutes and then she left. The only words uttered were mine, “God bless you,” as she approached me and again as she left and her groans as she wept, only comprehensible to the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:26). There is a place for debate, but when debate fails, small steps of faith remain and are what move the mountains.

I wrote this article defending the use graphic images of abortion victims:  The Use of Graphic Images, In Light of the Cross

There are some other great resources that defend in depth, the use of graphic images, I personally recommend these:

“Exposed the fact that abortions are being done through all NINE months of pregnancy in ABQ, the reality that women who get abortions are putting their lives at risk…and oh yeah, put an abortionist under scrutiny by the New Mexico Medical Board for a botched 35 week abortion!”

2013 kicked off with the culmination of several years of hard work,  investigations, and countless hours of research which produced a New Mexico Medical Board investigation into late-term abortionist Shelley Sella. In 2012, complaints were filed with the NM Medical Board (NMMB) regarding 11 abortion injuries at Southwestern Women’s Options, Albuquerque’s late term abortion clinic. The Board’s initial response was to resist any investigation. Out of the 11 New Mexico complaints, only one was investigated, that of a 35-week abortion which resulted in a ruptured uterus.

The botched abortion took place on May 12, 2011. Tara obtained a copy of the 911 call placed that day, which revealed incriminating details of the medical emergency. Tara worked with Operation Rescue to file a series of complaints that resulted in the Board’s action.

Here is an interview with Tara by local news channel KOB 4 regarding the NMMB investigation of Shelley Sella:

Shelley Sella faced an investigation by the NMMB for gross negligence and for violating the standard of care during a 35 week botched abortion that resulted in the woman’s uterus rupturing. On February 7, 2013 the NMMB issued their ruling and Shelley Sella got away scot-free due to the fact that when it comes to performing abortions…there isn’t a standard of care for abortionists to adhere to. Therefore, Sella could not be held accountable for violating a standard of care that doesn’t exist. Ironically, on the same day that the NMMB exonerated Shelley Sella, sidewalk counselors witnessed an ambulance transport another women to the ER after yet another botched abortion at the hands of late-term abortionists at Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO). On March 1, 2013 we were able to document yet another botched abortion at SWO bringing the total of 14 abortion related injuries since 2008!

While we are disappointed with the outcome of the NMMB investigation, this case has raised tremendous public awareness about the reality that abortions are taking place here in New Mexico through all nine months of pregnancy and that every-time a woman seeks out the service of an abortionist to kill her baby, she is placing her very life in danger due the the grave risks that the abortion procedure itself poses.

This investigation garnered both local and national news coverage, here is one such article that was featured on the front page of the ABQ Journal:  Late-Term Abortion Debate Turns to ABQ

Pastors gather to support late-term abortion ban

“Pastors gathered to be the voice for unborn babies. They prayed for the end of abortion.

Pastors and demonstrators hoped their rallies would have an influence on banning late-term abortions locally.

The idea behind Project 52 is to have a presence at the abortion clinics 52 weeks a year, and to put pressure on the residents of Albuquerque to support the ban in the upcoming election.

Pastors said they will gather and protest abortions until there is a change.”

Project 52 is an interdenominational church initiative engaging congregations for 52 weeks a year in promoting the sanctity of human life from the time of conception. Providing a framework for multi-faceted action to facilitate a culture honoring and understanding the value of Human life in all aspects of our society.

“As our hearts become broken over what has broken God’s heart we will see His mighty power working on our behalf. So we would like to share this message to our churches and pastors, to every person who has a heart to end the shedding of innocent blood; and ask that the hearts of our pastors to be broken and this brokenness of heart to be passed on to the members of their congregation and we will see the kingdom of darkness start to fall one by one as we persevere.” – Pastor Washington

“Project 52 is about bringing churches together, not in doctrine, but its about bringing churches together to try and save innocent babies whose voices have not even been heard yet. Jesus calls all of us to bear fruit and one thing that you can do as a church in this city, is you can stand for the lives of unborn children.”  -Pastor Mark Mullaney

“Historic Albuquerque citywide referendum, which was the first attempt in the country to restrict abortions at the local level.”

From June 28-July 25th over 27,000 ABQ residents signed the petition to get the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance” onto a Nov. 19th citywide election ballot. Local pro-lifers worked hard and quick to educate and inform those 27,000 people who were reached primarily in Catholic and Evangelical churches. The months that followed included the first ever citywide election campaign where the citizens of ABQ were given the chance to stand for life by casting a vote for the ordinance to stop abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. This election drew national attention to ABQ, which is now nationally known to be the late term abortion capital of the country. It also served as the fodder for what the city needed to begin to see the atrocities that happen here every week. While only 38,000 people voted for the ordinance and 48,000 voted against it-ultimately causing it to fail, attention was given to the fact that abortions are done through all nine months of pregnancy in ABQ. We were able to reach further into the community with the message of life  than ever before and countless seeds were planted within hearts of individuals and whole congregations. We believe that the whole process was what was desperately needed to awaken this city and while we have never put our trust in the political process to be the “silver bullet” that will ultimately end abortion, it opened many doors of opportunities, moving forward. The hearts of the people, especially women, must be changed and molded by God’s heart in order for abortion to end and that is exactly what we will continue to pursue until the killing stops.

Here are a few quotes from (just some of) the national news coverage over the past few months regarding this ballot initiative, which has LAUNCHED Albuquerque into the national spotlight, and has helped expose New Mexico’s radical abortion agenda:

“Compared with its neighbors’ abortion policies, New Mexico’s is practically socialist. Abortion is legal throughout pregnancy, and New Mexico has none of the restrictions—ultrasounds, waiting periods, building-code regulations intended to make it hard for clinics to stay open—that have swept the country in the past five years.” The American Prospect, Anti-Choicers’ New Mexico Experiment

“Mrs. Shaver said it’s called the Wild West of abortion, and she said that’s why Dr. Curtis has set up in New Mexico — and why he draws from so many other states.” The Washington Times, Abortion battle goes local in New Mexico as Albuquerque votes on 20-week ban

“Patients are drawn to the Albuquerque clinic from other states, he said, and ‘it was the national implications of late-term abortions in New Mexico that brought us here. A certain amount of social tension is necessary to cause change,’ [Mr. Shaver, 34] said, citing the methods of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” The New York Times, Albuquerque Becomes Latest Focal Point in Abortion Wars

“Three years ago, anti-abortion ‘missionaries’ Tara and Bud Shaver left Operation Rescue’s base in Kansas with one target: a clinic that abortion opponents say has turned this southwestern city into the late-term abortion capital of America. But after a loss at the medical board and making little headway in the Democrat-controlled Legislature, their group, Project Defending Life, gathered enough signatures to place a late-term abortion ban on the municipal ballot. It is believed to be the first such referendum of its kind in the country and is being watched as a possible new front for activism in the abortion wars that have typically been waged at the federal and state levels.” The Associated Press (AP), Albuquerque vote targets late-term abortion clinic

“The vote — which would effectively end late-term abortions in New Mexico — has turned this low-key, progressive city of a half million people into the latest flash point in the abortion culture wars. It opens a new pro-life strategy to push abortion restrictions at the local as well as state and federal levels.” TIME, Albuquerque Abortion Battle Gains National Attention

“ALBUQUERQUE — A high-desert city in one of the poorest states in the nation has become the abortion debate’s latest battlefield and a testing ground for whether abortion limits can be imposed on the local level. Although similar bans have been passed by state legislatures, New Mexico’s largest city is believed to be the first municipality in the country to place such an initiative on a ballot.” Los Angeles Times, Albuquerque becomes latest abortion battlefield

“The failed referendum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy is the first known instance of the issue being addressed at a local level, but it might not be the last. ‘I think we’ll see this more and more,’ said Mallory Quigley, communications director for Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion group. ‘We’re constantly doing things on the local level in terms of outreach because those methods are very effective in bringing about social change in general,’ said Tara Shaver, who with her husband, Bud, is with the group Project Defending Life.” CNN, Albuquerque: New path for abortion opponents

“Tara Shaver, the chairwoman of an Albuquerque group that backed the proposed ordinance, said she and other opponents of abortions have become increasingly frustrated by their inability to win votes at the state Legislature in Santa Fe. ‘We were sick and tired of legislators imposing their will on us, so we decided to bring this issue directly to the people,’ said Ms. Shaver, adding that she has gotten calls from people across the country who said they were interested in pushing for similar city referendums. ‘Win or lose, this initiative has been what our city needed to wake them up to the barbaric practice of late-term abortions,’ Ms. Shaver added Tuesday before the final votes had been tallied.” The Wall Street Journal, Albuquerque Voters Reject Bid to Ban Late-Term Abortions

“In the end, Tara and Bud were here before the ordinance, and they’ll be here after it, whether it passes or not. Fetal pain, or abortion after 20 weeks, is something they can get behind, but it’s not their sole mission – they want to see it all gone. ‘We hope the people do rise up and vote for the ordinance,’ said Bud, rounding a corner. Even if they don’t, ‘there’s been awareness raised. And that can only produce some good stuff in the long term.’” MSNBC, The new frontier of the abortion wars
