Abortion Stigma Helps Keep Los Alamos, New Mexico Abortion Free

    By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, New Mexico– In October of 2020, Brenda Pereda, a controversial University of New Mexico trained abortionist opened a Women’s Clinic at the Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC). In interviews she was not shy about her agenda to provide abortions for “whatever the reason” and to expand a pro-abortion agenda “into the DNA of the hospital.” However, by March of 2022 she had resigned from her position and it’s clear that her agenda wasn’t welcomed by fellow physicians at the Medical Center.

It is impossible to escape the stigma that follows abortionists who have betrayed true medicine by killing innocent helpless babies in their mothers wombs,” stated Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico.

Community groups such as BabyNet, a subcommittee of the Los Alamos County Health Council, and the First Born Program openly welcomed Pereda and her radical abortion agenda but the hospital itself failed to consider the baggage that she would be bringing into the medical community.

While Brenda Pereda’s excuses for resigning from her newly obtained position at the Los Alamos Medical Center stemmed from a “non welcoming feeling” from a “male doctor-centered environment” that she claimed originated from alleged racism because she is a, “Latina physician of color of Mexican descent.” It is more likely however, that her reputation as an abortionist and her stated agenda to foist a radical abortion agenda upon the Los Alamos Medical Center staff is what was not welcomed. This is bolstered by her own admission to the Los Alamos Reporter that she was triggered that her colleagues may have considered her solely as an, “abortionist”.

While Pereda claimed that the work environment was hostile and unsafe for her, a spokesperson for Los Alamos Medical Center stated that,

A thorough investigation has taken place, and we are confident that these claims of a hostile and unsafe work environment are unfounded.”

Pereda’s replacement is Dr. Sharon Ransom and according to a receptionist she does not perform abortions and the Los Alamos Medical Center will not allow abortions in the hospital.

    Tara Shaver continued,

Abortion Free New Mexico is pleased to report that no abortions are being performed at the Los Alamos Medical Center. Every abortion takes the life of an innocent human being and the stigma surrounding those who perform abortions is a natural consequence that will never dissipate. More doctors should disassociate with those who do harm by performing abortions. The community of Los Alamos must stand together in order to make sure that abortions are not expanded into their community. New Mexico continues to be an abortion magnet in the bigger cities like Albuquerque and Las Cruces. The pro-life community continues to strive to meet the needs of pregnant women so that killing their children in the womb will one day become unthinkable.”

Brenda Pereda sits on the National Abortion Federation Board of Directors and prides herself on working at the University of New Mexico (UNM) for over a decade as an Assistant professor and Assistant Dean of diversity, equity and inclusion. Pereda also trained residents and students to perform abortions. She has published various medical research projects regarding postpartum IUD insertion, reversible and permanent contraception in India as well as nitrous oxide for pain management of first trimester surgical abortions.

Pereda has most recently been sighted at Southwestern Women’s Options late-term abortion facility located in Albuquerque, NM. It is unknown where she is currently employed.

  • Our Mission Continues

    Our Mission Continues

    By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, New Mexico- In 2006 we made a commitment to the Lord to work to end abortion until Roe v. Wade was overturned or until the Lord called us home with Him. We NEVER imagined that our commitment would be fulfilled in 2022! Even though the end to Roe v. Wade has become a reality, our work to end abortion continues in New Mexico! While many lives will be saved throughout this nation and the healing of our land can begin, our work now is all the more significant.

We humbly ask for your fervent prayers for wisdom, strategy, guidance, provision and protection as we continue to be in the thick of the battle for LIFE here in New Mexico. Praise the Lord, that though we are currently experiencing an oppressive government and wickedness abounds, our God shows His power.

He truly is sovereign and able to do more than we can ask or imagine. THANK YOU for standing with us as New Mexico’s pro-life missionary family.

    IN THE NEWS:

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico was featured, the Sunday after Roe was overturned, in an article on  the front page of the LA Times, highlighting how New Mexico is ground zero and how we need to support pregnant women in a post Roe America.

    Here is an excerpt:

“While abortion advocates consider the coalition a sort of underground railroad for women in crisis, those who oppose the work — such as Tara Shaver, a local antiabortion advocate — say the system affirms Albuquerque’s reputation as the ‘late-term abortion capital of the world.’

On a recent afternoon, Shaver pulled her minivan up to a cemetery plot, called Baby Land, for infants and fetal remains she’d helped arrange with a priest. ‘Naomi Scarlette,’ one of the fetal grave plaques read. ‘June 1, 2017. Your wings were ready, but our hearts were not.

”The term ‘abortion’ has lost all meaning, and this place brings it back,’ Shaver said.’We don’t need to shuttle women into New Mexico. We need to meet these women where they are and provide enough support that they don’t need to choose between their child’s life and their own.’Shaver organized a schedule with other Christians to ensure that at least one person is praying during every operational hour of local abortion clinics.”

Thank you for your continued prayers, support and for standing with us in this battle for LIFE.

UNM Committed To Expand Abortion Services In New Mexico with Assistance from the Federal Government

    By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, New Mexico- On Thursday May 26, 2022 transgender Assistant U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary “Rachel” Levine toured the UNM Center for Reproductive Health free-standing abortion facility and pledged that the Biden Administration was committed to expanding abortion services in New Mexico in light of the leaked Supreme Court memo revealing the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade.

This visit came just nine days after Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico appeared on the Infowars War Room with Owen Shroyer detailing how New Mexico is currently the late term abortion capital of our nation and is poised to be, “ground zero for abortion period” once Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Levine, the Biden Administration representative, spoke to KOB 4 news and revealed the federal government’s radical abortion expansion agenda:

“It is absolutely critical for New Mexico to continue to allow the full range of reproductive health services that women need, including abortion services,” Levine said.

UNM officials told KOB 4 they’re committed to taking on extra patients.

“If the decision follows the outline of the draft, then it’s going to severely impact women’s reproductive health rights and the ability to receive the full range of services in many states,” Levine said. “To be able to provide those services for women in New Mexico, and for many other states, they need to look to expand those services. We’ll work to support them.”

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,

“While many Americans oppose the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, and this is prohibited by the Hyde Amendment, it is egregious that the Biden administration has plans to work with the University of New Mexico to prop up the collapsing abortion industry and to utilize federal assistance to fund abortion tourism. These actions will only serve to further the culture of death in our state and the devaluing of human life in the womb.

Just as the federal government is desperately working to enable the University of New Mexico to expand abortion in our state, Abortion Free New Mexico is equally committed to meet the real needs of women in our community. Every day volunteers prayerfully position themselves outside the University of New Mexico abortion center and are prepared to let women know that there is hope and an abundance of pregnancy resources available to them.”

Abortion Free New Mexico is on the Front Lines

The pro-life community has an amazing opportunity to grow together as a powerful life saving force. Abortion Free New Mexico’s daily prayer campaign, No Sidewalk Without the Savior, is a practical way to bring the body of Christ onto the sidewalks in front of the UNM Center for Reproductive Health abortion facility.

Here are a few glimpses of how Abortion Free New Mexico’s prayerful presence is making a difference:

    • From a Tuesday Volunteer: “A gentleman pulled up to the stop sign and called out to us telling us that he was not going to abort his baby, that he was going to keep his baby. He then did the sign of the cross and seemed so full of joy.
    • From a Thursday Volunteer: “We spoke with a gentleman about the Roe vs. Wade decision that so many are thinking and talking about right now. He seemed like maybe he was from another country but was very open to learn about the implications of this ruling. I know we gave him food for thought.
    • Dinah Vargas and Tara Shaver encountered a woman who was leaving the nearby motel. In a divine appointment she disclosed that she is pregnant, living in hotels and in desperate need of housing. We were able to give her resources and are keeping in touch with her to make sure she gets all of the help and support she needs. Please pray for the moms with housing needs as it can be a very long drawn out process for them.

  • REPORT: New Mexico Leads The Nation With The Highest Percentage of Late Term Abortions

REPORT: New Mexico Leads The Nation With The Highest Percentage of Late Term Abortions

    By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, New Mexico- According to the most recent data, published in 2019 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New Mexico unfortunately leads the nation with the highest percentage of late-term abortions. In other words, late-term abortions represent 11.6% of all abortions performed in New Mexico. TABLE 10 of the CDC Abortion Surveillance — United States, 2019 report shows that New Mexico performed 406 late-term abortions (over 21 weeks gestation) which was 11.6% of the total number of abortions performed in the state (3,485) that year. By comparison, of the 43 states that met the CDC’s reporting requirements, (Nine states, California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York State, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin either did not report, did not report by gestational age, or did not meet reporting standards) Florida performed the most abortions according to TABLE 10 with 71,914 in 2019, however, 217 or 0.3% of the total number of abortions performed in Florida were over 21 weeks gestation.

Since 2010, Abortion Free New Mexico leaders Bud and Tara Shaver have reported (and coined the designation) that Albuquerque, New Mexico is the, “late-term abortion capital of the country” based on the groundbreaking research and undercover investigations that they have conducted. Virtually every major news source in the country has reported on this fact.

The New York Times was one of the earliest to report that Albuquerque, New Mexico is known as the “late-term abortion capital of the country” in 2013:

Albuquerque has become the latest flash point in the abortion wars, with Operation Rescue, the militant group based in Kansas, calling it the “late-term abortion capital of the country.” This is because a private clinic, Southwestern Women’s Options, is one of only a few nationwide that offers abortions after the sixth month of pregnancy.

The drive for a city referendum has been led here by a couple who trained with Operation Rescue in Kansas and moved here three years ago as anti-abortion “missionaries.”

“We felt called to come and serve in Albuquerque,” said Tara Shaver, 29. She and her husband, Bud, moved here largely to find a way to shut down Southwestern Women’s Options, she said.

The CDC report Abortion Surveillance — United States, 2019 published on November 26, 2021 confirms what Abortion Free New Mexico has been sounding the alarm on for many years.

It is important to note that while New Mexico performed the second highest number (406) of late-term abortions in 2019 behind New York City (1,096) only 2.2 percent of the total number of abortions performed (49,784) in New York City were late-term abortions. Additionally, according to a survey conducted by Abortion Free New Mexico, in conjunction with this report, no abortion clinic in the entire state of New York will perform an abortion beyond 24 weeks gestation. New Mexico on the other hand will perform full-term abortions up to the day of birth. In fact, Abortion Free New Mexico conducted an undercover investigation in 2017 that revealed that late-term abortionists at Southwestern Women’s Options located in Albuquerque, New Mexico will perform a full-term abortion at 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Undercover At 37 Weeks- Pressure to Abort! from Abortion Free New Mexico on Vimeo.

The designation that Albuquerque, New Mexico is the “late-term abortion capital of the country” takes into consideration not only the high number of late-term abortions performed after 20-21 weeks gestation, but also the fact that New Mexico has become the hub for abortion tourism where women travel to New Mexico for full-term abortions well into the third trimester because their state has either:

    1. Enacted common sense legislation prohibiting late-term abortions, or
    2. As is the case with the handful of radically pro-abortion states, where there aren’t necessarily laws restricting abortions, abortionists regulate themselves by refusing to perform abortions beyond a certain point.

For example, while New York performs abortions over 21 weeks gestation, women travel from New York to New Mexico to obtain third trimester abortions. In fact, in 2013 Abortion Free New Mexico leaders, with the help of Operation Rescue brought national attention to the fact that a woman was severely injured after traveling from New York to obtain an abortion at 35 weeks gestation at Southwestern Women’s Options, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Southwestern Women’s Southwestern Women’s Options, owned and operated by Curtis Boyd who specializes in third trimester abortions, is drawing women from all across the nation, and even the world, for the latest possible full-term abortions. Disturbingly, Albuquerque based late-term abortionist, Curtis Boyd, takes great pride in this. A fact that he openly admitted when asked in a 2017 interview,

So when he’s asked about what he thinks when he hears Albuquerque described as “the late-term abortion capital of the nation”—a term the Shavers take credit for coining—Boyd responds wryly.

“A great sense of pride,” he says.

It is necessary to note that both Maryland and Colorado are also destinations for third-trimester abortions, however Maryland did not meet the CDC reporting requirements and according to the CDC data, Colorado performed 173 late-term abortions (1.3 percent of the total abortion rate) in 2019 compared to 406 late-term abortions performed in New Mexico.

Late-term abortions are performed over a 3-4 day period. It includes an injection into the mother’s womb on the first day which causes a fetal heart attack. Over the course of the next few days, the cervix is artificially dilated so that the mother can be induced to deliver her stillborn child. This is called the induction method and occurs at an out patient clinic setting or in a local hotel. Late-term abortions are never performed when the mother’s life is at risk, the procedure alone takes too much time to benefit a woman who is in a dire situation. In fact, this abortion method has many risks and is responsible for the death of at least one local New Mexico woman, Keisha Atkins in 2017. A late-term abortion in New Mexico can cost as much as $17,000.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) also performs late-term abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy at their free standing abortion facility in Albuquerque, NM. This location in particular is the the focus of Abortion Free New Mexico’s “No Sidewalk Without the Savior” prayer campaign that is launching on April 1, 2022. Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,

“New Mexico currently has zero laws protecting pregnant women and their unborn babies from dangerous and barbaric late-term abortions. It is the absence of laws and the unwillingness of our legislators to come to the table to seek the wellbeing of both mother and child that has made us an abortion magnet, even in the latest stages of pregnancy. Abortion Free New Mexico is working many angles to build a culture that protects life, because every life is unique, precious and unrepeatable.”
