Albuquerque, New Mexico- Albuquerque City Councilor Renee Grout’s effort to re-appropriate $250,000 away from Planned Parenthood was hijacked Monday night, August 15, 2022, and ultimately failed. The Albuquerque City Council voted to approve an amended version of R-22-46 which will now give $250,000 to Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains as well as $100,000 to the Barrett House and $100,000 to the Community Energy Efficiency Project.
The amendment that hijacked Grout’s original intent to prevent $250,000 taxpayer dollars from funding the nations largest abortion provider was sponsored by Councilors: Tammy Fiebelkorn (D), Trudy Jones (R) and Klarissa Pena (D). Once again a Republican, Trudy Jones, voted with liberal progressive democrats to ensure that Planned Parenthood will receive taxpayer dollars which violates the consciences of many residents in the city of Albuquerque.
There were many present in support of Councilor Renee Grout’s amendment to re-approppriate the Planned Parenthood funds to the Barrett House, they spoke very rationally about the need to use those funds to help homeless women and their children which would alleviate some of the crisis our city is currently experiencing. Many shared that it makes more sense to use the funds for the immediate needs of our community and that taxpayers should never be forced to pay for abortions.
Most of those who spoke in favor of funding of Planned Parenthood were members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. They called for an increase in funding to Planned Parenthood due to the increased traffic the state anticipates in the wake of the overturning of Roe v Wade. The original sponsor of the bill, Tammy Fiebelkorn, agreed with their call for additional funds and she made it clear that she is an unapologetic supporter of the business that kills over 300,000 babies in the womb each year.
Councilor Dan Lewis rightly pointed out,
“Planned Parenthood of New Mexico performs surgical dismemberment abortions up to 5 months gestation and brings in an annual revenue of $4.7 million dollars!”
Lewis raised the question as to why Planned Parenthood need additional money from Albuquerque taxpayers. This unfortunately did not sway the 5 members of the council that ultimately voted to pass the bill.

Albuquerque, New Mexico- On August 15, 2022 the Albuquerque City Council will discuss and vote on reappropriating the $250,000 tax payer dollars that were approved in the city’s budget in May. Albuquerque residents have the opportunity to let their voices be heard in support of the reallocation of funds, either in person or by email using links below.
City Councilor Renee Grout is the sponsor of R-22-46 which will reallocate these funds to the Barrett House and Youth Homeless Shelters. Abortion Free New Mexico has referred numerous homeless women to the Barrett House over the years for shelter and assistance.
Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement:
“The decision made by the Albuquerque city council to give taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood sets an unconscionable precedent, tax paying citizens should never be forced to fund businesses that perform abortions or advocate for the killing of pre-born children. Abortion Free New Mexico is grateful to councilor Renee Grout, who proudly signed Abortion Free New Mexico’s a pro-life pledge, for taking a pro-active approach to redirecting these funds.”
Let’s support Councilor Grout’s efforts to redirect these funds. Please let your voice be heard as a resident of Albuquerque and respectfully ask these city councilors to support the reallocation of these funds so that they may be used to benefit women, children and youth.

Planned Parenthood is a private, billion-dollar organization providing services that violate the consciences of many taxpayers. I believe it is a better use of taxpayer dollars to fund solutions to real and current issues such as our women, children, and youth homelessness.

The highlight of the month was our Sidewalk Counseling Training seminar featuring long time pro-life warrior Don Blythe from At the Well Ministries. Don is the uncle of our late friend Kortney Blythe Gordon who was the inspiration for our prayer campaign No Sidewalk Without the Savior. It was encouraging to hear life saving stories from his ministry and to be better prepared for directly engaging women seeking abortions at the University of New Mexico’s free standing abortion center. August is looking pretty busy already as we inch closer to Election Day in November.

Abortion Free New Mexico hosted a Sidewalk Counseling Training with Don Blythe of At The Well Ministries this month. Additional guest speakers included: Paula Gonzales executive director of Care Net of Albuquerque and Lydia of Mourning to Joy, Care Net’s post-abortion resource.
Abortion Free New Mexico was a proud sponsor of the Valencia County Freedom Golf Tournament presented by Off The Cuff ABQ Talk Radio! About 70 golfers participated in the inaugural tournament.
Tara joined Becky Harada of Beyond Borders Ministries to discuss the connection between abortion and human trafficking. In this interview Tara is asked how she would dialogue with a woman at an abortion clinic suspected of being a victim of human trafficking. They discuss how the abortion pill may be exploited by human traffickers as it potentially removes the human contact between sex trafficked women and their providers. Tara also shares some of the local pro-life resources readily available to young pregnant moms.

The group “New Mexico Did You Know?” invited Abortion Free New Mexico to their monthly meeting in the East Mountains to share about abortion in our state and what we’re doing about it. It’s always a blessing to inform new people and encourage them to be involved in the battle for precious lives.
No Sidewalk Without the Savior
Our prayer campaign outside the University of New Mexico’s free standing abortion center that performs abortions through 6 months of pregnancy has garnered over 60 volunteers of varying commitments since we launched in April. We still have the need for more volunteers but are thankful that people are praying everyday at this place of death in our city.
Our volunteers have shared with us how the Lord is working in them as they take a stand for life. They tell us that the majority of responses they get are positive by those passing by. In fact, one lady got out of her car, hugged and thanked our volunteers for being there and then brought them water.
Another volunteer told us that people stop and write down or take a picture of the Option Line number we have on our signs that point women to local pregnancy resources. Bud and I are so grateful to those who volunteer one hour every week to be present where abortion seeking women are.
