“New Mexico for nearly a decade has been the declared ‘mission field’ for some of the country’s most strident activists opposed to abortion.
The Shavers publicly labeled Albuquerque the ‘late-term abortion capital of the world,’ centering many of their networked efforts on the University of New Mexico and the medical practice of abortion provider Southwest Women’s Options. With a stated goal of making New Mexico ‘abortion-free,’ the Shavers have continued to work with Imbarrato, whose rhetoric and activism overlaps theirs in both urgency and focus.
‘Legalized abortion in this country is a constitutional crisis for which no one in our government has ever taken responsibility,’ Fr. Stephen Imbarrato wrote. He added that the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision 45 years ago ushered in “government-sanctioned and funded daily mass murder of thousands of innocent preborn.’

By Bud Shaver Albuquerque, New Mexico- Did you know that New Mexico is one of 16 states that fully funds abortions, even late-term abortions? You may be surprised that state tax dollars are used to kill New Mexico’s children since the Hyde Amendment prevents federal dollars from directly funding the deadly procedures. However, New Mexico’s abortion facilities are taking full advantage of this state funding loophole. But why should the state force us to pay for other peoples abortions when we have religious and moral objections to it?
Until we have the right leadership to make New Mexico Abortion Free, we must rise up to let our voices be heard and protest the use of our tax dollars that are funding this modern holocaust. In doing so, babies lives will be saved and the hearts of those in our community will be changed after seeing the truth.
Sadly, the abortion industry and their supporters, which include the majority of state legislators and pro-abortion members of clergy in New Mexico, are very proud that New Mexico is drawing women from all across the world to Albuquerque for abortions. It’s unfortunately a booming business that is embraced with pride.
According to an article published by the Santa Fe New Mexican,
One-third of the 1,193 state abortion restrictions passed since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade in 1973 were enacted between 2011 and 2017, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights research and policy group.
In that same time period, New Mexico enacted zero major limitations. It remains, to the pride or ire of advocates on opposite sides of the abortion aisle, one of the least restrictive states in the nation.
‘I know that in some circles [New Mexico is] considered the worst place in hell for Americans, or something like that,’ Penn said. ‘But we’ve got to be damn proud that this is a place that women can look to, and where women feel safe.’
On any given day, and especially on days when abortions are performed, protesters gather outside Boyd’s clinic. For years, Albuquerque missionaries Bud and Tara Shaver led the protests.
The Shavers have made campaigning against abortion their life’s work. Albuquerque, they often say, is “the late-term abortion capital of the world.
Tara Shaver said she finds the religious coalition’s pro-faith, pro-abortion rights agenda ‘ironic.’

While Churches are currently closed, abortion clinics in New Mexico are open and have been deemed essential businesses. In fact, a spokesperson from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office issued the following statement by phone to Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico when pressed about closing New Mexico abortion clinics to help stop the spread of Covid-19,
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries.”
While New Mexico takes great pride in its religious traditions, New Mexico also seemingly takes pride in being the late term abortion capital of the WORLD!

By Bud Shaver Albuquerque, New Mexico- We launched Faith to Action Friday in March of 2019, now after a year, the media has done a news report on our prayerful protest presence out at The University of New Mexico’s free-standing abortion facility UNM Center For Reproductive Health (UNMCRH). It took a global pandemic for the media to take notice!
According to the report,
“The anti-abortion group Abortion Free New Mexico called the protest, calling it a “Faith to Action Friday.” According to the groups’ website, protestors were asked to gather from noon to 1 p.m. to protest the fact that abortion is considered an essential service in New Mexico.”
Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico, issued the following statement to local media concerning our Good Friday Protest:
“If Governor Lujan Grisham is going to insist that abortion services are essential in New Mexico, our prayer and protest presence outside of these facilities is equally essential. While the media was trying to make our prayerful protest an act of “defiance” against our governor, we were simply being faithful to our weekly commitment to stand up for the babies that are being killed. It’s important for us to remember that even in the midst of a crisis we must maintain our unalienable rights as American citizens. We forfeit these rights if we don’t use them and so we are grateful to those who stood with us last week for the babies.

By Bud Shaver Albuquerque, New Mexico- There are currently 13 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia) that are abortion free in our nation, in these combined states countless babies lives are being saved. I guess you could say that this is a silver lining of the current situation our nation now faces. However, New Mexico is missing the opportunity to truly protect all lives by allowing abortion businesses to continue operating as usual.
While Churches, non-essential businesses, and elective surgeries have been halted in the state, late term abortions continue to bring women here to New Mexico from all across the nation, who by the way, are not quarantining for 14 days after their arrival as New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan has mandated by executive order. Instead they leave within 4-5 days to return home with empty wombs.
In southern New Mexico, Franz Theard is busy moving his grisly abortion machine across state lines to defy the state of Texas’ orders to stop the killing of unborn children, and at least one woman has been injured on the New Mexico side.
Of course, the UNM Center For Reproductive Health is still performing late term abortions up to 24 weeks and EVERY Friday while we are out praying, UNM’s free standing abortion clinic parking lot is PACKED! On March 25, a spokesperson from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office issued the following statement by phone to Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico,
“We have discussed this matter and the clinics are not going to close. Some people are claiming that abortions are elective surgeries and we are not considering them as elective surgeries.”
Abortions are absolutely elective and non essential and have no place in a civilized society. The fact that it is tolerated is a shame to our state and our nation. May we resolve to stand in the gap for the babies scheduled to die and continue to be a voice for them.

The overreaching response to this pandemic is unprecedented! Never in America’s 243 year history has our country, our constitutional freedoms, nor our Churches been shut down! This is just a desperate power grab by failed globalist operatives and is yet another attempt to undermine President Donald Trump and destroy the economy in the run up to the vital 2020 election!
It’s amazing how our way of life can change overnight, isn’t it? We can rest assured though that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever! For us, the coronavirus outbreak has given us a chance to have to be at home, which has actually been nice. It seems like we’ve been so busy lately, it is an election season after all. Since we homeschool, our mornings are already reserved for learning, so we have just limited taking the kids out in order to avoid big crowds at stores and indoor play areas. It has also given us a chance to talk with our children about the situation at hand. About how to trust in the Lord and be considerate of others.
Thank you so much for your prayers and encouraging words during this time. Hopefully this season will pass quickly and we can get back to life as normal. We have maintained our presence outside of UNM’s abortion facility and have a special action item in our April Newsletter (linked below) to call for New Mexico officials to halt abortions in the state.

This month, during a press conference at the White House,
“Vice President Mike Pence has called on hospitals to delay all elective procedures across the country to help ensure medical capacity is focused on stemming the spread of the coronavirus.”
Locally, other health agencies are following this recommendation. The New Mexico Dental Association is recommending that dental offices consider suspending non-essential and non-urgent dental care.
Abortions are performed routinely up to 32 weeks of pregnancy and sometimes beyond as elective procedures in the city of Albuquerque. It is for this reason that New Mexico is known as the late term abortion capital of the nation. Other health agencies are taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, yet the abortion industry is taking no such measures, even though they are offering non-essential elective procedures.
So this month, we called on all New Mexico abortion providers to halt elective abortion procedures during the current state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak,
“Abortion Free New Mexico is calling on the University of New Mexico, in addition to all New Mexico abortion providers, to immediately stop all elective abortions during the current state of emergency in the state. The University of New Mexico operates a free-standing abortion facility, The UNM Center of Reproductive Health that conducts elective abortions up to 24 weeks gestation. New Mexico tax dollars and medical resources can be better allocated to individuals facing immediate life threatening complications stemming from the coronavirus outbreak. Abortions are elective procedures and as such should be halted immediately throughout New Mexico.”
We also joined with Created Equal and other national organizations in calling upon the governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), and governors across the country to immediately shut down abortion facilities to #StopTheSpread of COVID-19.
Not only are these facilities consuming scarce personal protective equipment, they risk spreading COVID-19 throughout New Mexico. Furthermore, abortionists themselves are not immune to COVID-19 in fact, Operation Rescue reported that, Three Abortionists Admit Symptoms Consistent with COVID19 as Abortion Facilities Ignore Health Risks. These facilities also put a burden on community EMTs and hospital ERs, should they have a medical emergency at one of their locations.
Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico issued the following statement,
New Mexico will soon become ground zero for the spread of COVID-19 across the nation because of the states abortion tourism which draws women here from all across the nation. New Mexico offers elective abortions up to 32 weeks of pregnancy, and throughout all nine months on a case by case basis. It’s no secret that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) is a champion for elective late term abortions, but she needs to recognize the danger that is being posed here if abortions do not halt immediately. Abortion Free New Mexico wants every life to be protected and that is why we are urging the the New Mexico governor, Attorney General and Department of Health to work together to stop elective abortions which will inevitably contribute to the spread of the coronavirus throughout the nation.
In addition to contacting our Governor and the New Mexico Department of Health, we also filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Attorney General.
Mark Harrington President and Founder of Created Equal issued the following statement,
Across the nation, schools have been closed. Businesses have been shuttered. Churches have even closed. Then why are abortion facilities still open for business? If abortion is a ‘choice’ then abortion is an elective procedure. However, abortionists want to have it both ways. In a clear double standard, abortion centers across the nation are staying open during this national health crisis, risking public health and safety.
While we are still waiting on a response from our New Mexico leaders, several other states have had great success from this #StopTheSpread campaign.
Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Maryland HAVE STOPPED ALL ELECTIVE ABORTIONS during this outbreak!
According to LifeNews.com, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves urged the state’s only abortion facility to close and comply with a state order postponing all elective medical procedures due to the coronavirus.
Governor Reeves issued the following statement,
We’re doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children. We’ll take whatever action we need to to protect not only the lives of unborn children, but also the lives of anyone who may contract this particular virus.
